ABSTRACT
This study examines the novel Kembali ke Desa by Tri Budhi Sastrio as an example of a novel that could be used as teaching material to integrate the International Baccalaureate Indonesian as a first language curriculum with the International Baccalaureate Theory of Knowledge curriculum, as understood through key topics in the field of philosophy of language. The study itself will be a combination descriptive qualitative study and library study, examining the intersection between (1) IB first Language courses, (2) IB TOK course goals in relation to the optional theme of “Knowledge and Language”, as understood through the lens of philosophy of language topics, and (3) an examination of how these themes could be explored through the reading of the novel, Kembali ke Desa by Tri Budhi Sastrio. The philosophy of language topics which were examined in this study were: (1) communication: language and thought; (2) social interaction and language; (3) truth; (4) translation and interpretation; (5) creativity. The study concluded that TOK course goals can be adequately linked to Indonesian language course goals through the reading of a novel like this one and that the study of literature is uniquely suited for exploring philosophy of language topics.
