Past perfect tense digunakan untuk menyatakan suatu kejadian yang terjadi sebelum waktu tertentu di masa lampau. Dengan rumus:
(+) Subject + Had + V3 + Object
Contoh kalimat: We had finished the homework before we went to bed
(-) Subject +Had + Not + V3 + Object
Contoh kalimat: We had not finished the homework before we went to bed
(?) Had + Subject + V3 + Object
Contoh kalimat: Had we finished the homework before we went to bed
