Menurut model kompetensi terbaru berdasarkan Perdirjen GTK Nomor 6565/B/GT/2020, kompetensi guru meliputi kategori pengetahuan profesional, praktik pembelajaran profesional, dan pengembangan profesi. Model kompetensi ini digunakan dalam pengembangan materi dan penilaian pada program pendidikan profesi guru, pengembangan instrumen kompetensi teknis untuk kenaikan jenjang jabatan guru, dan pengembangan materi dan penilaian pada program pendidikan guru penggerak, diklat calon kepala sekolah dan calon pengawas sekolah. Penulisan soal-soal P3K juga sudah mengacu pada model kompetensi tersebut.
Selaras dengan model kompetensi di atas, guru transformatif harus memiliki delapan kompetensi berikut, yakni: 1) berdedikasi tulus sepanjang waktu, 2) berani mengambil keputusan, 3) responsif, berinisiatif, dan mandiri, 4) pendorong lingkungan kerja positif dan kolaboratif, 5) pembimbing dan motivator, 6) pembelajar sepanjang hayat, 7) pantang menyerah menghadapi beragam tantangan, dan 8) berpikiran matang, beretika dan berintegritas.
