(Brain Rot in Gen Z/Dokumen Pribadi)

Introduction

Brain Rot has become a buzzword among Gen Z, reflecting their concerns about the effects of endless scrolling and shallow content consumption. From TikTok trends to late-night doomscrolling, this phenomenon has sparked debates on how digital habits are reshaping our minds. As The Sun (2025) highlighted, “Brain Rot” was even voted the word of the year, underscoring its relevance in describing the mental fatigue and cognitive decline associated with excessive media consumption.

At its core, Brain Rot refers to a decline in mental sharpness caused by overexposure to digital content, often of low quality. Constant scrolling on social media, binge-watching videos, and consuming memes may seem harmless. Still, as The Atlantic (2025) explains, these habits contribute to a diminished attention span, reduced creativity, and even feelings of dissatisfaction. The term encapsulates the growing struggle to stay focused and engaged in an age of abundant yet distracting information.

Technology, while offering incredible benefits, plays a double-edged role in this dilemma. On one hand, it connects people across the globe, provides instant knowledge, and facilitates creative expression. On the other, it fuels habits that contribute to Brain Rot. Late-night scrolling rituals, for example, have become so pervasive that they are now considered a “modern crisis,” as reported by News.com.au (2025). With technology so deeply intertwined in daily life, finding balance becomes critical.

This raises a vital question: Can technology itself provide solutions to the problems it creates? Tools like ChatGPT, designed to enhance productivity and spark creativity, present an intriguing possibility. As El País (2025) points out, ChatGPT has already begun playing roles in education, mental health, and communication. But is it capable of countering the very habits that contribute to Brain Rot? This article explores whether ChatGPT can be a game-changer for Gen Z in reclaiming focus and mental clarity.

What is ChatGPT?

ChatGPT is an advanced AI-powered text assistant developed to help users with various tasks through natural language processing. Designed by OpenAI, ChatGPT can answer questions, provide explanations, and assist with everything from drafting emails to brainstorming creative ideas. Unlike traditional search engines, it interacts conversationally, making it more approachable and intuitive for users (El País, 2025).

One of the key strengths of ChatGPT lies in its ability to enhance productivity and support learning. Whether it’s helping students summarize articles, solve math problems, or generate creative writing prompts, ChatGPT has proven to be a versatile tool (Le Monde, 2024). It also serves as a quick resource for professionals, assisting with research, drafting content, or even sparking new ideas. This adaptability makes it particularly appealing to Gen Z, who value tools that save time and streamline tasks.

Another significant advantage of ChatGPT is its capacity to help users navigate the overwhelming amount of information available online. In an age where digital content is abundant but often disorganized, ChatGPT acts as a guide. It can summarize lengthy articles, highlight important points, or suggest credible sources, empowering users to engage with information more effectively (The Atlantic, 2025).

For Gen Z, who often feel the effects of information overload, ChatGPT offers a way to manage their digital lives more wisely. By providing curated responses and fostering better decision-making, it helps counterbalance the chaos of endless scrolling. As El País (2025) noted, some users have even turned to ChatGPT for tasks typically reserved for human professionals, such as emotional support or problem-solving, highlighting its growing role as a trusted companion in the digital age.

The Phenomenon of Brain Rot Among Gen Z

The rise of Brain Rot among Gen Z is largely fueled by shallow and aimless content consumption. Endless scrolling through social media feeds filled with memes, short videos, and clickbait has created a digital environment where users are constantly bombarded with low-quality, attention-grabbing material. According to The Atlantic (2025), this pattern is driven by platforms designed to exploit the brain’s reward system, triggering dopamine spikes that keep users hooked. This constant chase for instant gratification leaves little room for meaningful engagement or self-reflection.

One of the most significant contributors to Brain Rot is the addiction to dopamine hits from scrolling social media. Each like, comment, or share activates a reward response in the brain, making it increasingly difficult to resist the pull of these platforms (Alodokter, 2025). Over time, this cycle leads to a decreased ability to focus on tasks requiring sustained attention, as the brain becomes conditioned to crave quick rewards instead of deeper intellectual engagement.
