The area of linguistics known as semantics studies how language has meaning. Semantics, then, is the science or study of the meaning or meanings that are included in a representation such as a language, code, symbol, or other. Two other parts of semantics are typically linked to it: pragmatics, which is concerned with how a society utilizes symbols in practice within a certain context, and syntax, which is the process of creating complex symbols from simpler ones. The goal of linguistic semantics is to comprehend language-based human expression. Formal logic, semiotics, and programming language semantics are other types of semantics.

The word "semantics" refers to a wide range of concepts, from highly technical questions to common concerns about word choice and connotation. It is frequently used in common speech to describe comprehension issues that come down to subtleties in word choice or meaning. There has been a lot of research done on this understanding problem, especially in the area of formal semantics. Semantics is the study of how signs or symbols are understood in particular circumstances and contexts in linguistics. This viewpoint incorporates proxemics, body language, speech, and facial expressions---all of which convey important information. Semantic content is conveyed by written language features including verse structure and punctuation.

Semantics as a formal area has many intersections with other disciplines, such as lexicology, syntax, pragmatics, etymology, and more, yet semantics is still a well-defined field in and of itself. Semantics and reference are closely related concepts in the philosophy of language. Semiotics, communication, and philology are related fields. This makes the formal study of semantics difficult. Semantics is not the same as pragmatics, which studies the interaction between language symbols, meanings, and language users' use, or syntax, which concentrates on the combinatorial features of language units without taking meaning into account.
