ABSTRACT

This study is entitled “AN ANALYSIS OF WRITING COMPOSITION OF THE THIRD YEAR STUDENTS OF SMPK ST. YOSEPH KUPANG IN THE SCHOOL YEAR 2009-2010.” It aims at answering the following questions (1) Are the Third Year Students of SMPK St. Yoseph Kupang in the school year 2009-2010 able to write a composition? (2) What is the level of their ability?

This study was conducted at the Third Year Students of SMPK St. Yoseph Kupang in the school year 2009-2010. In collecting the data, the writer gave some topics chosen by the students to be constructed in writing a composition. The method used in this study was Descriptive Method.

The standard of measurement used to evaluate the students’ ability level was the one proposed by John Anderson ranging from: 0-5: bad; 6-10: below average; 11-15: average; 16-20: good; 21-25: very good; 26-30: excellent.

The result of the study shows that: (1) the Third Year Students of SMPK St. Yoseph Kupang in the school year 2009-2010 are able to write a composition. (2) The students’ level of ability is Good (16.8).

Based on the result of the study, the writer suggests: (1). The teacher needs to consider the students’ English grammar, vocabulary and fluency (style and ease of communication) because this study proves that the students committed many mistakes on those aspects. (2). The students are required to enrich their grammar, vocabulary; particularly the use of appropriate tenses, regular and irregular verbs, the use of auxiliary verbs, and the use of full verbs in the sentences.
