According to Pascal, since God is indivisible and without limits, we do not bear any relation to him. Thus, neither the existence nor the nature of God can be known by reason: ‘We are therefore incapable of knowing either what he is or whether he is.’[4]
2.It is given that ‘Either God is or he is not’ (Dieu est, ou il n’est pas). Since reason cannot decide this question, nor can it prove either wrong, one must wager in this necessary game—he cannot choose not to wager at all.
3.One must stake both his reason/knowledge and will/happiness on whether God exists. He has to avoid error and wretchedness lest he loses the true and the good.[5]Â What option, then, should he wager on?
