Gadamer telah mengikuti proyek Heideggerian tentang mengatasi metafisika, tetapi dia mencoba melakukannya dalam dimensi hermeneutik, yang di sisi lain koheren dengan analisis struktur hermeneutik eksistensi. Heidegger telah mendefhal ini sikan pemahaman sebagai bentuk dasar dari orientasi duniawi manusia dan lingkaran hermeneutik sebagai modus fundamental keberadaan kita di dunia. Selain itu, dia telah menempatkan Dasein di pusat ontologinyahermeneutika, tetapi itu tidak berarti hermeneutika Gadamer harus diartikulasikan sebagai ontologi fundamental yang dipahami secara transendental. Dia berpikir cara untuk mengatasi sejarah pelupaan keberadaan adalah dengan memulai dari apa yang kita miliki, yaitu mencari dalam tradisi kita sendiri apa yang dapat memungkinkan kita untuk mengatasinya.

Lebih spesifiknya, atasi dari 'dalam', tanpa mengesampingkannya. Di sisi lain, Gadamer mempelajari secara mendalam Heidegger terakhir, yaitu Kehre, di mana ia mendasarkan pemahaman linguistik dan dari situ ia mencoba menguraikan hermeneutika 'pasca-metafisik'. Topik seperti seni, 'benda' (Sache), bahasa, ditafsir ulang mengikuti alur hermeneutika laten yang dapat dilihat pada almarhum Heidegger.
