This steady increase in turnover highlights the expanding influence of online gambling in the Indonesian economy, despite regulatory efforts to curb the activity.

Legal and Regulatory Environment

Indonesia's legal framework is predominantly shaped by Islamic law, which prohibits gambling. The government has taken various measures to curb online gambling, including blocking access to gambling websites and imposing heavy penalties on those caught participating in or facilitating such activities. However, enforcement remains a challenge due to the sophisticated methods employed by operators to evade detection and the high demand among users. Consequently, the regulatory environment is in a constant state of flux, struggling to keep pace with the evolving online gambling landscape.

Psychological Aspects of Online Gambling

The Appeal of Online Gambling

Online gambling attracts individuals through its accessibility and convenience. Unlike traditional gambling venues, online platforms are available 24/7 and can be accessed from the comfort of one's home. This ease of access removes the physical and social barriers associated with traditional gambling, making it an attractive option for many.

The psychological rewards of online gambling play a crucial role in its appeal. The excitement and thrill of potentially winning money provide a dopamine rush similar to other addictive behaviors. A 2022 study by the University of Indonesia found that 70% of online gamblers reported gambling as a way to relieve stress and escape daily pressures. For some, online gambling offers an escape from the stresses and monotony of daily life, providing a temporary distraction or a way to cope with emotional challenges.

Addiction and Compulsive Behavior

The addictive nature of online gambling is a significant psychological concern. The mechanisms of addiction in online gambling are complex and multifaceted. They often involve a combination of intermittent reinforcement (unpredictable rewards) and the illusion of control, where individuals believe they can influence the outcome of the game.

Studies have shown that online gambling can lead to compulsive behavior, where individuals feel an uncontrollable urge to gamble despite negative consequences. According to the National Agency for Research and Development (Balitbang), approximately 8% of Indonesian online gamblers exhibit signs of gambling addiction, which amounts to around 4 million people. This compulsive behavior can result in severe financial problems, strained relationships, and deteriorating mental health. In Indonesia, the lack of public awareness and limited access to addiction support services exacerbates the issue, leaving many individuals struggling to cope with their gambling addiction.
