Introduction

Online gambling has become a rapidly growing phenomenon worldwide, and Indonesia is no exception. The proliferation of internet access and mobile technology has made gambling more accessible than ever before, leading to a significant increase in the number of online gamblers. While the convenience and entertainment value of online gambling are evident, it also raises considerable psychological concerns. This essay explores the psychological aspects of online gambling in Indonesia, examining the appeal, addictive nature, and mental health impacts of this activity. By understanding these factors, we can better address the challenges posed by online gambling and develop effective strategies for mitigation and support.

Overview of Online Gambling in Indonesia

Online gambling encompasses a wide range of activities, including sports betting, poker, casino games, and lotteries conducted via the internet. In Indonesia, the rapid growth of online gambling can be attributed to several factors, such as increased internet penetration, the ubiquity of smartphones, and the anonymity afforded by online platforms.

Prevalence and Growth in Indonesia

Despite stringent regulations and the prohibition of most forms of gambling in Indonesia due to cultural and religious beliefs, the online gambling market has flourished. According to a 2023 report by the Indonesian Internet Service Providers Association (APJII), approximately 19% of the Indonesian population has engaged in online gambling activities at least once. This translates to over 50 million people, highlighting the significant penetration of online gambling in the country. The underground market continues to expand, driven by technological advancements and the ease of access to gambling websites and apps.

Online Gambling Money Turnover

The financial aspect of online gambling in Indonesia has also seen significant growth. According to data from the Indonesian Financial Transaction Reports and Analysis Center (PPATK), the estimated turnover of online gambling money from 2018 to 2023 is as follows:
