This museum was founded during the Dutch rule. The inauguration took place on July 31, 1915, by the civil governor and the Aceh Military General H.N.A swart. At that time, the museum was only in the form of a Aceh Custom Home (Rumoh Aceh) whose existence was still maintained in the area of the museum yard, until now.

In front of the Aceh Museum there is a large bell called "Cakra Donya" which is 1.400 years old. This bell was a gift from the Chinese emperor from the Ming dynasty to the Sultan Mughayat Shah in the 15th century. This bell was brought to Aceh when the sultan Ali Mughayat Shah of the Aceh Sultanate conquered Pasai in 1524 AD.
