Librarians plan activities, offer competitions and invite guests to tell stories related to a theme to highlight the importance of reading.

As a school emphasizing the importance of good reading habits as part of knowledge cultivation, Global Jaya International School (GJIS) arranges this event annually; this year’s theme is “One World, Many Stories.” GJIS will celebrate Book Week from the 26 to 30 September, 2011, with a story writing competition, a READathon, a Book Fair and four guest authors from Australia, The USA, The UK, via Dubai and Indonesia.

Acknowledging that children’s education can be greatly nurtured by active participation of all, not only the students themselves and the teachers,

[caption id="attachment_130893" align="alignleft" width="300" caption="Last Year's Guest Speaker, Trinity, Shared Her Writing Experience to GJIS Students"][/caption] Another highlight of the week will be a “Book-In”, where all students and staff meet in GJIS’ gymnasium to participate in 15 minutes of USSR: Uninterrupted, Silent, Sustained Reading, this is an extension of a daily classroom reading activity which is a worldwide programme that has been implemented in GJIS Primary School for many years.

Former UK Children’s Laureate, Michael Rosen (2008), sums up the importance of reading : “Only when all children are in a book-loving environment will they achieve literacy, yes but a lot more: a confidence in handling abstract ideas, an understanding of a multiplicity of viewpoints and the complexity and diversity of human interaction that comes through reading widely and often.”

“We believe in this idea and would like to introduce book-loving activities to students in a festive manner and encourage them to make book-reading an integral part of their daily routine.” Ibu Deborah Clohesy, The GJIS Library Manager who coordinates this event, stated.
