Three Departments in Faculty of Agriculture Universitas Sumatera Utara has Successfully Conducted International Summer Course on SDGs 2022

Medan - One of the efforts of the Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) especially the Faculty of Agriculture in realizing the World Class University achievement plan is to increase the ratio of foreign students in campus activities, USU through its Office of International Affairs has successfully held  Summer Course which is a short course in the learning process and campus life in USU and the local culture of North Sumatra with the theme "The 1st Talent Agricultural on SDGs 2022". This first Summer Course was carried out by three different departments, such as Department of Agrotechnology, Department of Food Technology, and Department of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering, Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Sumatera Utara. This activity was attended by 57 foreign and domestic students from India, Japan, Vietnam, Poland, Australia, China, Malaysia and Thailand as well as 10 domestic and foreign Speaker. The Summer Course program was held on 26 July 2022 - 05 August 2022. During the activity, participants gain additional knowledge from experts in their respective fields related to agriculture to food processing related to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and have a lot of experiences to know and learn about culture in North Sumatra.

This event was opened directly by Rector of Universitas Sumatera Utara, Dr. Muryanto Amin, S.Sos., M.Si and Dean of Faculty of Agriculture, Dr. Ir. Tavi Supriana, MS on Tuesday, July 26 2022 in DH Penny Hall building, Faculty of Agriculture, USU which was also attended by Vice Dean I, Dr.  Lisnawita, SP., M.Si,  Vice Dean II, Ir. Revandy Iskandar Muda Damanik M.Si., M.Sc., PhD. and Vice Dean III of the USU FP, Prof. Dr. Ir. Elisa Julianti, M.Si as well as Coordinator in this year's Summer Course. In his remarks, Dr. Muryanto Amin., S.Sos, M.Sc conveyed an overview of World Class University for Universitas Sumatera Utara where one of the programs is to increase the ratio of foreign students through Summer Course activities and other programs. Same with Rector of USU, the Dean of Faculty of Agriculture, also conveyed the benefits of this summer course for the future progress of Faculty of Agriculture and USU, so the internationalization progress of departments in Faculty of Agriculture could begin. Prof. Dr. Ir. Elisa Julianti, M.Sc as Coordinator of this summer course activity said this activity would be continuous, such as general lectures, cultural and tourist visits were also held to several areas in North Sumatra.

The speakers who participated in this summer course were Dr. Ir. Ageng Setiawan Herianto, M.Sc from FAO Representative for Indonesia, M. Edwin Syahputra, SP, M.Agr,Sc., Ph.D from the Indonesian Oil Palm Research Institute (IOPRI), Asst. Prof. Wasaporn Chanput, Ph.D from Kasetsart University, Ir. Hotnida Sinaga, M.Phill, Ph.D from Universitas Sumatera Utara, Riswanti Sigalingging STP., M.Sc., Ph.D from Universitas Sumatera Utara, Dr. Slamet Widodo, S.TP, M.Sc from IPB University, Prof. Fazillah Ariffin from University of Science Malaysia, Irda Safni SP., MCP, Ph.D from Universitas Sumatera Utara, Dr. Jim Schaefer from Maharishi International University, USA, and Ir. H. Soekirman who is a former Regent of Serdang Bedagai (2016-2021).

This activity is expected to be able to increase the ratio between foreign lecturers and students at USU and also accelerate the internationalization progress of departments in USU. This will affect quality and raise USU's national and international ratings.
