The Effect of China and India's Territorial Disputes on Regional Stability

The territorial conflict between China and India has an up and down relationship tension that has an influence on regional stability.

This was spoken directly by Fadhlan Nur Hakiem, Lecturer of the International Relations Study Program at Singaperbangsa University in Karawang, on (11/06/2024).

"As we know, China is currently one of the countries that rivals the United States. Its economy is strong and its military capability has also increased significantly. On the other hand, India also has the potential to become a big country, one of the countries that has nukes like Pakistan. If then the escalation of the conflict continues to increase between China and India, the potential to disrupt this stability is very high because indeed both countries have strong military capabilities, especially China, which has increased rapidly over the past decade."

Fadhlan also noted that historically, this border conflict has experienced periods of escalation and de-escalation. Although sometimes it does not meet common ground, India's response to China is fairly good conflict management.

Fadhlan added, "Despite the escalation and widespread concerns about a potential conflict between India and China, it has not yet materialized. Although China has been aggressive, India has managed its response quite well."

What about China and India's bilateral cooperation amidst these border tensions?

Regarding bilateral cooperation between China and India in the midst of border conflicts, for Fadhlan the border dispute between China and India is not an obstacle for both of them to cooperate, as evidenced by the fact that there are still Chinese goods flowing into India. But Fadhlan also emphasized that territorial disputes will also have the potential to become a cause of a country's bilateral relations.

Resolving the territorial dispute between China and India in this case requires a cautious approach and a consistent dialogue framework. Both countries should prioritize peace and stability, both in the region and the world.

Ultimately, a more harmonious relationship between China and India will bring positive impacts not only to the two countries, but also to the Asian region and the world. By focusing on cooperation in economic, social and cultural fields, and strengthening mutual understanding and trust, China and India can build a solid foundation for a more peaceful and prosperous future.
