Personal data is something that is very important and needs to be protected properly. Especially in the current digital era, there have been many cases of theft of personal data for the benefit of irresponsible parties. Therefore, we as data owners must be able to protect our personal data to avoid data theft.

Safeguarding personal data is very important, especially in today's digital era. Personal data is information that can be used to identify a person, such as name, address, telephone number, email, bank account number, and so on. This personal data can be used for various purposes, both positive and negative.

A protected of data security technology commonly used to protect important data and information are as follows:

1. Encryption

Encryption is a technology used to secure data by converting it into code that can only be read by authorized people.

2. Tokenization

Tokenization is a process in which sensitive cardholder information is converted into a specific token or code and then converted back by the bank to process payments.

3. Sandboxing

In contrast to other techniques, sandboxing allows programs or applications to run in a safe, isolated environment from the main system, making it safe to test without compromising the security of the main system.

4. Firewalls

A firewall is a system or device that functions to regulate network traffic on a protected system or network. The main purpose of using a firewall is to protect the network or system from unwanted network attacks, such as viruses, malware, or hacking attacks.

5. Backup and Recovery

This type of data security is used to back up and restore data when data loss or damage occurs. You can use the Deka Vault service from Lintasarta Cloudeka to activate powerful backup and recovery technology because it is specifically designed for data backup and disaster recovery.

There are some reasons why protecting personal data is important:

1. Prevent misuse of personal data by irresponsible parties

Personal data can be used to commit fraud, identity theft, or even more serious crimes, such as terrorism.

2. Avoid potential fraud

Personal data, such as credit card numbers or bank account numbers, can be used to carry out illegal transactions.

3. Avoid potential defamation

Personal data, such as home addresses or telephone numbers, can be used to spread false or harmful information.

4. Maintain privacy

Everyone has the right to maintain their privacy. By safeguarding personal data, we can protect our privacy from irresponsible people.

RUU following percentage shows losses due to financial data leaks Cases of misuse of personal data that are detrimental to society have recently occurred in many regions in Indonesia. Based on the survey, as many as 28.7% of people have experienced misuse of personal data.

According to the 'Public Perception of Personal Data Protection 2021' report conducted by the Ministry of Communication and Information, the thing they experienced most was a reduction in savings in their bank accounts (44.1%) due to data leaks. Followed by a decrease in e-wallet balances (32.2%). Other losses felt by respondents include making transfers or purchases because they were contacted by certain people or companies.

Of a number of banking or financial institution products, respondents rated e-wallets and bank accounts as products that were considered vulnerable to data leaks. It was recorded that 36.6% of respondents said there was data leakage in digital wallets and 30.2% in bank accounts.

According to the report, the increasing number of cases of leakage and misuse of people's personal data by irresponsible parties has made people disapprove of sharing activities or selling people's personal data between institutions.

The Ministry of Communication and Information together with the Katadata Insight Center prepared a Public Perception Report on Personal Data Protection to present the public's understanding of the right to protect personal data and knowledge about the Draft Personal Data Protection Law (RUU PDP). This report analyzes primary data from a survey of 11,305 respondents in 34 provinces on 14 - 21 July 2021.

How to Keep Data Secure?

In today's digital era, we must maintain data security from theft by irresponsible people. You can maintain data security in various ways, such as:

1. Regularly change social media passwords

One way you can maintain data security is to regularly change your social media passwords within a few months. Make sure the password you use is quite complicated and has a combination of lowercase letters, capital letters, numbers and symbols.

2. Do not upload personal data

The rise in digital fraud that is currently occurring is because there are still many people who do not understand what constitutes personal data. Personal data should not be uploaded carelessly, especially on social media, because it is vulnerable to misuse by other people. This personal data includes parents' names, date of birth, email address and KTP.

3. Activate Two-Factor Authentication

Currently, more and more social media or messaging applications have the Two-factor Authentication feature. This feature allows you to get double protection for your account so that it is not easily compromised by other people. Some examples of platforms that have this feature include Gmail, Instagram, and WhatsApp.

4. Using Incognition Mode

The next way to maintain data security is to use incognito or private mode when browsing. The advantage of using this mode is that it can erase your browsing history.

5. Only transact on trusted platforms

Now there are many platforms or websites that offer goods/services for carrying out online transactions. Shopping activities can threaten data security if not done carefully.

6. Be careful when using public Wi-Fi

Public Wi-Fi is not always secure, so it's best to avoid sharing personal data when using public Wi-Fi.

In this way of the large losses that will be experienced, it is very important to realize how important it is to maintain data security. By protecting personal data properly, we can protect ourselves from various risks that may occur. So, to prevent potential losses due to weak data security, make sure you only access websites that use SSL (Secure Socket Layer). The characteristic is that the HTTP version has changed to HTTPS, S represents the word Secure. In this way, your data can no longer be viewed on the website when exchanging data.
