Suicide is a trend among young people?
Recently, the media has been shocked by several suicide cases that occurred in the community. Starting from the UNNES student case to the suicide case committed by elementary school children in South Jakarta, suicide cases have actually occurred frequently among the community. In the January-June 2023 period, POLRI reported that there were 663 suicides in Indonesia. This figure increased by 36.4% compared to the same period in 2021 (486 cases).

Suicide is a complex issue, and contributing factors can involve various aspects, including biological, psychological, social and environmental factors. Psychology provides deep insight into some of the factors that may contribute to suicide risk. However, it is important to remember that every individual is unique, and no single factor can be identified as the sole cause of suicidal behavior. Some psychological factors that may play a role include:

1.Mental Disorders
The presence of mental disorders, such as depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and anxiety disorders, can increase the risk of suicide. These disorders can affect a person's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors.

2.Feelings of Hopelessness
People who feel hopeless, hopeless, or lack an adequate understanding of how to overcome their problems can be more prone to suicidal thoughts.

3. History of Trauma

Experiences of trauma, such as sexual abuse, violence, or significant loss, can increase the risk of suicide. Trauma can have a serious impact on a person's mental well-being.

4. Sexual Identity or Orientation Disorder

Individuals who face disapproval or discrimination related to their sexual identity or orientation may have a higher risk of committing suicide.

5. Conduct Disorder

Behavioral problems, such as drug or alcohol addiction, impulsive behavior, or ongoing interpersonal conflicts, may contribute to suicide risk.

6. Social Isolation

Lack of social support and isolation can increase the risk of suicide. Positive social relationships and support from those around can play an important role in preventing this behavior.

7.Imitative Thinking
If an individual sees or hears about a suicide, it can increase their risk, especially if the individual identifies with the person who committed suicide.

It is important to remember that these factors are often interrelated, and many individuals who experience multiple risk factors will not commit suicide. Seeking professional help from a psychologist, psychiatrist, or social worker can be a very important step to help individuals who are experiencing emotional or mental difficulties If you feel symptoms of depression, have suicidal feelings, or know someone who is contemplating suicide, contact the police call center at 110 or the Ministry of Health's mental health services at 119 or 118.
