Dragon Age Inquisition is a fantasy role-playing game released in 2014 by developers Bioware and published by Electronic Arts. It was directed by Mike Laidlaw, written by David Gaider, and composed by Trevor Morris. It is the third game in the Dragon Age series which first began with the release of Dragon Age Origins in 2009 and continued two years later with Dragon Age II in 2011. It received many accolades and achievements and was even awarded The Game Of The Year in 2014. Â But how does it stack up now in 2022 against many other fantasy RPGs? Find out below...
In Dragon Age Inquisition, gamers will play the role of The Inquisitor, the leader of an organization called the Inquisition with the purpose of investigating and closing a mysterious hole in the sky called The Breach that has been releasing monsters and demons into the world.Â
The Inquisitor will be assisted in this adventure by other members of the Inquisition, who can help them in battle, create weapons and armor, and also by making potions.Â
Each member of the Inquisition has their own unique backstory and personality, like Cassandra Pentaghast, a returning character from Dragon Age II, is a rigid and aggressive knight and a member of the order of the Seekers of Truth, and also Varric Tethras, another returning character from Dragon Age II, is a dwarf and novelist who uses a crossbow as his weapon.Â
Each of them also have their own questline which was masterfully written and very entertaining as much as the main questline which makes character interactions one of the best parts of this game. This is a very good thing because the main antagonist of the game was very boring and flat.
Like most RPGs, gamers can create and freely customize their main character, which in this game is The Inquisitor. Gamers can select one out of three classes which consist of, warrior, mage, or rogue. For the character's race, gamers can select one out of four races from the following: human, dwarf, elf, or qunari a race exclusive to the Dragon Age series. Like previous games in the series, Dragon Age Inquisition has a choice and consequence system where one choice can impact the entire game.Â
Unlike most modern RPGs, Dragon Age Inquisition is not a fully open world game, instead, it has a semi-open world structure, as the world is divided into different sections which can be explored freely by gamers. Although each of these sections looks beautiful and is filled with content, most of them are awful and uninteresting.Â
For the combat system, Dragon Age Inquisition decides to mix and match the systems that were used by its predecessors Dragon Age Origins which was more tactically focused, and Dragon Age II which was more action-oriented to try and create a more balanced combat system although the end result was something mediocre. Even though this game was released eight years ago, graphically the game still looks beautiful, especially the environment.
So, with everything that has been discussed in the review above it's time to answer the question, is Dragon Age Inquisition still worth playing in 2022? My answer is... definitely, even with all the shortcomings I have written above, the positive aspects of the game especially the character interactions more than makes up for it, and with a sequel titled Dragon Age Dreadwolf already in development now is a good time to jump into the Dragon Age series.
