Becoming a teacher is a very noble profession. Teachers play a crucial role in the field of education. Without teachers, the quality of education in a country would decline, and the morality of society could be adversely affected. Therefore, the role of teachers extends beyond mere instruction, it also includes shaping the character and moral values of students.
Body Argument:
The burden a teacher carries is immense, along with the great responsibility that comes with it. A teacher's role is not only to help students excel academically but also to act as a second parent after their mother and father. Teachers must also be able to nurture their students and serve as good role models for them.
Circulating on various social media platforms, it was reported that a tragic bus accident occurred during a study tour in Thailand on October 1st. The accident resulted in a fire that claimed the lives of 25 people, including 22 students and 3 teachers. One of the most touching stories is of a brave teacher who embraced her students until her final breath. This incident shows the immense sacrifice a teacher makes to protect their students, even in the face of fear and anxiety.
Every October 5th is observed as World Teachers' Day, while November 25 is celebrated as National Teachers' Day, coinciding with the anniversary of PGRI (Indonesian Teachers' Association). These occasions serve as a form of appreciation for the contributions of teachers, both in Indonesia and around the world. However, why do many people still remain unaware of or fail to celebrate National Teachers' Day? This raises important questions, especially when considering the welfare of teachers in Indonesia, which remains very inadequate, particularly in remote areas. In these regions, the number of teachers is still low, and the wages and recognition provided, especially for honorary teachers, are also quite insufficient.
The government should pay more attention to the welfare of teachers, especially honorary teachers. Teachers play a significant role in shaping the future of the nation through education. To achieve a prosperous future for the country, it is essential to have a succeeding generation educated by qualified educators. Therefore, the welfare of teachers must be a top priority to ensure that education in Indonesia can continue to develop.
According to the Puslapdik website of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology, incentive assistance for non-PNS teachers who don't have teaching certificates will be disbursed each semester in 2024. Previously, this assistance was provided as a lump sum once a year. This support is aimed at non-PNS teachers who don't have certificates and have 17 years of service in formal education (including kindergartens, elementary schools, junior high schools, senior high schools, vocational schools, and special education) and 13 years of service in non-formal education (such as early childhood education centers or daycare centers).
Hopefully this initiative will gradually improve the welfare of teachers in Indonesia and enhance their motivation and professionalism in educating their students. Ultimately, this will contribute to building a high-quality education system in Indonesia.
Conclusion:
Education is one of the determining factors in the progress or decline of a country. Teachers play a crucial role in education and in shaping the character of students. As students, we must respect them as we would our own parents. This respect serves as a form of appreciation for all that they have given, including knowledge and the sacrifices they have made. Furthermore, both the government and society need to improve the welfare of teachers to ensure a high quality of education. With the right support, we can create an even better future for our nation.
