Sixteen Days of Reflection on Violence Against Woman

Violence against women is a crime of humanity. The violence continued to increase over time. Acts of violence against women is violence that is layered physical violence, sexual, psychological and neglect.

National Commission for Women annual records in 2016 explains that sexual violence in Indonesia increased by 26% (2015) to 30% (year 2016). The abuse occurred precisely performed by those closest to the victim. Law enforcement officials, state officials and public figures are also involved as perpetrators.

Culture in Indonesia many marginalizing women. Women have always emphasized in number, are considered passive and not capable than men. Without realizing that women present as appendages of men. Many women are not aware of this and continue to make it commonplace. Women today are more likely without a fight against the system that oppresses them.

Given this culture, it is often the case of domestic violence. Domestic violence (domestic violence) actually can happen to anyone in the household. But violence is prevalent menimpah weaker groups physically, economically, socially, so that victims of domestic violence is generally the wife, children and domestic workers. Domestic violence is very ironic because it is done by people nearby like brother and father.

Nobody in this world wants to be treated unfairly, because injustice is an unpleasant condition. Instead, everyone always crave justice, because justice is an inherent need in humans claim to be natural to everyone.

With the existence of these cases, the need for awareness of violence against women. Because these cases, the National Commission of Women present with efforts to minimize and even eliminate violence against women. GMKI as well as other student organizations also participated voicing it.

Church as communion container must address this. The church needs to raise awareness of the families of the husband does not do violence to his wife and children. Many churches are already aware of such violence, but tend to inhabit. Cultural values espoused still practiced in church life, the church also discredit female lead.

On November 25 to December 10 is a day that has been agreed to undertake 16 Days Campaign on Violence Against Women (16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence). Vulnerable have time to connect symbolically with some other big celebration, namely:

  • November 25, International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women
  • November 29, International Day of Women Human Rights Defenders
  •  December 1, World AIDS Day
  • December 2, The International Day of the Abolition of Slavery
  • December 3, International Day for Persons with Disabilities
  • December 5, International Day of Volunteers
  • December 6, Day of No Tolerance for Violence against Women
  • December 9, Anti-Corruption Day worldwide
  • December 10, International Human Rights Day
