International Cooperation in Support of Sustainable Development
As part of the global community, Indonesia actively engages in international cooperation to support the implementation of SDGs. This role is evident not only in Indonesia’s participation in global forums but also in its receipt of development assistance from various international organizations and donor countries.
Indonesia has collaborated with numerous international organizations such as the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the World Bank, and the Asian Development Bank (ADB). A notable example is its partnership with UNDP in developing the Integrated Sustainable Development Framework, which assists Indonesia in monitoring and evaluating SDG progress in an integrated manner.
Moreover, projects funded by ADB and the World Bank have been instrumental in supporting infrastructure, education, and health initiatives in Indonesia. For instance, the National Urban Water Supply Project aims to enhance access to clean water in urban areas.
Role in ASEAN and G20
As a member of ASEAN and the G20, Indonesia has platforms to promote sustainable development at regional and global levels. Within ASEAN, Indonesia advocates for regional collaboration on issues such as food security, energy resilience, and climate change. Meanwhile, in the G20, Indonesia has positioned itself as a proponent of policies that support inclusive development in developing nations.
However, despite its active international engagement, domestic challenges often hinder the realization of global commitments. For example, corruption and bureaucratic inefficiencies frequently obstruct the implementation of internationally funded programs.
Challenges in Implementing SDGs in Indonesia
Social and Economic Inequalities
Although Indonesia has made significant strides in poverty alleviation, social and economic inequalities remain pressing challenges. Income disparities between urban and rural areas, as well as between the western and eastern regions of Indonesia, underscore the need for a more inclusive approach to SDG implementation.
