Al-Aaraf -- Edgar Alan Poe

O! NOTHING earthly save the ray

[Thrown back from flowers] of Beauty's eye,

As in those gardens where the day

Springs from the gems of Circassy ---

O! nothing earthly save the thrill

Of melody in woodland rill --- Or [music of the passion-hearted]

Joy's voice so peacefully departed

That like the murmur in the shell,

Its echo dwelleth and will dwell --- With nothing of the dross of ours ---

Yet all the beauty --- all the flowers

That list our Love, and deck our bowers

Adorn yon world afar, afar ---

The wandering star ---

'Twas a sweet time for Nesace --- for there

Her world lay lolling on the golden air,

Near four bright suns --- a temporary rest ---

A garden-spot in desert of the blest.

Edgar Alan Poe's poem, entitled Al-Aaraaf, originates from and is inspired by the holy scripts of the Qur'an. Al-Aaraaf actually means the highest place. Where in this poem itself is also described and imagined a place where the highest place is between hell and heaven. This poem also talks about the greatness of Allah swt entirely with the various symbols used by Poe. This poem also contains things about beauty, and also the emotions of God's creatures. The important things highlight in this Poe Al-Aaraaf poem is about the beauty of heaven.

            Here depicted from the sentence:

As in those gardens where the day

Springs from the gems of Circassy ---

O! nothing earthly save the thrill

Of melody in woodland rill ---

In the third sentence, the word which is called the orchard Poe symbolizes and gets inspiration from the Qur'an where the garden is an orchard that is in heaven. Various kinds of fruits that we want are available in paradise orchards. The word comes from Surah Ar-Rahman which is in the Qur'an verse 48. In addition, the word below, which is a spring that comes from the Cricassy gem, is a symbol where heaven has two springs which is also written in surah Ar-Rahman verse 50. Therefore, Poe symbolizes with all the prosperity eternal life in heaven until only the quiet gurgling sound of a flowing spring is heard in a very calm and prosperous atmosphere.

With nothing of the dross of ours ---

Yet all the beauty --- all the flowers

That list our Love, and deck our bowers

Adorn yon world afar, afar ---

In the next sentence, Poe uses an eastern symbol in the form of nothing the dross of ours where every creature created by Allah swt certainly does its deeds and its heart is not filled with envy and jealousy, which is symbolized as trash. If the heart is full of envy and envy in daily social life as God's creatures, then heaven is not a place for these creatures. In the next sentence, that human heart and behaviour must be commendable which is symbolized as beautiful as a whole like a flower. That is sincerity as a creature of Allah swt where it is symbolized in the word list our love which will decorate our lives and also full of love of peace which will also decorate our homes as creatures of Allah "deck our bowers" in the afterlife. So, from now on it is being fertilized in the world far away so that when the day comes, we all have provisions.

'twas a sweet time for Nesace --- for there

Her world lay lolling on the golden air, Near four bright suns --- a temporary rest ---

A garden-spot in desert of the blest.

In the last four sentences, it emphasizes that the afterlife is a very comfortable life, especially in heaven, if Allah's creatures obey all of his commands as in the previous sentences, surely life in the afterlife will be very comfortable. As in the 16th sentence that life in heaven is very comfortable and sweetly symbolized. Furthermore, the life of the world will be abandoned and replaced by a comfortable afterlife which is symbolized by golden water. Indeed, life in the world is a temporary life that can only be said as a place to rest before a long journey. Until in the end you will find a place before the afterlife in the form of a spacious place, namely "padang mahsyar" which Poe symbolizes as the desert of the blest. This is because the Middle East is a place whose geographical location is in the form of a vast and expansive desert land.
