Isal is a teenage migrator. He comes from a low-income family. Isal's father passed away when he was 10 years old, due to an incident at work. He came from Lampung to Tangerang to help his brother work to pay for his mother's medical treatment. 

His mother has been suffering from Tuberculosis (TB) for the past year. Because his mother is no longer able to work and his brother is having difficulty earning an income to cover medical expenses. Isal forced to leave home and leave his mother. While living in Tangerang, Isal only intended to find medical expenses by working with his brother. But he learned a secret that his brother had that changed him forever.

The suburbs of Lampung, December 20, 2022. The sun is shining brightly, the birds are chirping, and a cool breeze is blowing casually, accompanying Isal as he walks home from school. Isal has bruises on his face and his school clothes are worn out. He is a brave and independent teenager. He always walks if he wants to go somewhere, even if it is a long distance. Because he only had one motorcycle and the motorcycle was a gift from Isal's brother Adjie.

The motorcycle is used by his mother to work from morning to night. As he was walking home from school, someone pushed Isal from behind. Isal fell down and looked surprised. Immediately, Isal stood up and turned around. It turned out that it was Samuel who pushed him. Samuel confronted Isal with two of his friends.

Samuel: "Woy Monkey, you're not done with me yet."

Samuel is a teenager who likes to bully and extort children at school, especially Isal. Because only Isal is not afraid of Samuel. When at school Isal confronted Samuel because he hit a younger sibling, Isal did not accept it and hit Samuel back. Therefore, Samuel and his friends confronted Isal on the street. Isal became angry and clenched his fists.

Isal: "Bastards, I'll knock the three of you out."

Without thinking, Isal immediately hit Samuel and Samuel's two friends immediately fought Isal. The three of them fought on the side of the road. The fight lasted for several minutes and the fight ended when one of the teachers saw the students fighting from afar. They immediately fled to a fairly crowded residential area. Isal ran as fast as he could and swore in the crowd. He checked around and it turned out that Isal had managed to escape from the teacher, but the bruises on Isal's face were getting bluer and his clothes were getting shabby.

Isal then stopped by a warung to buy some cold water to soothe his bruises. After that, he walked to the rented house where he lived. Arriving at the rented house, Isal heard a coughing sound from the front of the rented house and saw his mother who was already in the rented house. Isal called his mother Ama. His mother is a factory worker, Isal was confused why his mother had come home at noon, because her mother always came home from work at night. Isal immediately took the towel that was drying to cover his bruises. Then he saluted his mother and asked her while covering his bruises with the towel.

Isal: "Loh Ama is home already, how come it's so early? You usually go home late. And how come Ama's motorcycle isn't in front?"

The mother replied while holding back a cough.

Ama: "Yes sal, Ama only worked for a while. I left my motorcycle at the garage to get it serviced."

Isal asked again.

Isal: "Her cough is getting worse Ama, Isal heard her coughing from the front of the rent. Ama have you taken the medicine yet, Isal get some warm water."

 The mother answered.

Ama: "No need sal. How's school going, aren't you being naughty at school?"

Isal spontaneously replied and goes straight to the bathroom.

Isal: "No Ama, I'm fine today. Isal take a shower first Ama"

The mother replied.

Ama: "Yes, I'll cook sunny side up eggs for you. Ama take some wood from the back."

While Isal was bathing, he heard a loud coughing sound from behind the rented house. Isal was worried about his mother's health. After taking a shower and changing into school clothes. Isal goes straight to the kitchen to make sure his mother had taken her medicine.

Isal: "Ama, have you really taken the medicine? Isal heard a loud cough earlier while bathing."

His mother told that she was fine.

Ama: "I have sal, you don't need to worry."

The mother answered the question while holding back a cough. But this time she couldn't stop coughing. She coughed loudly without stopping while covering her mouth. Isal panicked and immediately took his mother to the kitchen bench. Then Isal got some warm water to relieve the mother's cough.

Isal: "Oh my gosh Ama, Ama's cough is getting worse, it looks like Ama hasn't taken the medicine, drink this warm water first Ama, Isal get the medicine first."

Isal took his mother's medicine in the room, but when Isal saw the contents of the medicine box. It turned out that the mother's medicine had run out. Isal immediately headed back to the kitchen and the mother's cough still hadn't stopped even though she had given warm water. Isal told the mother that her medicine ran out.

Isal: "Ama, your medicine has run out since when? The contents of the medicine box have nothing left."

The mother answered while holding back a cough.

Ama: "Actually, my medicine ran out last week, but I didn't want to worry you Isal. Ama's income is not enough to buy medicine or treatment for this month and the months ahead. And there's no money or news from your brother"

Isal replies.

Isal: "Oh my gosh ama, don't lie to Isal ma. Isal can also help replace Ama to work."

The mother grabbed Isal's shoulder and replied.

Ama: "Amam doesn't want to trouble you Sal, but Ama is no longer working at the factory. Today is Ama's last day of work because Ama's condition disturbs the work environment. Ama is no longer strong. And our motorcycle has been pawned to pay for last month's medical bills and rent."

Isal was confused and wondered what he should do to solve this problem. He wanted to replace his mother as a laborer. But Isal's age was not enough to meet the criteria. Isal had just turned 18 years old and his mother did not allow Isal to become a laborer. The mother immediately advised Isal to go to Tangerang  to work with his brother. The mother then informed Adjie that later his brother would go to the city to help him find medical expenses. Initially Isal did not want to go to the city because he wanted to accompany and care for his mother. 

Isal also wanted to find work in the city. But his mother told him that jobs in Lampung were very rare and only for adults who had complete documents and high academics. Isal was worried that if he left his mother, there would be no one to take care of her. Her mother insisted that she would be fine. She would set up a small shop from the leftover funds from mortgaging her motorcycle and last paycheck. Then Isal's uncle who lived in the rented house next door would also help take care of his mother. Isal resigned himself and accepted his mother's request.

Night fell. Isal was sitting in front of the courtyard, thinking about what he should do later. He had to decide on a school and Isal had not seen his brother for a long time. The last time he saw his brother was when he goes to Tangerang to look for work. His brother is also married, but has no children. His brother always talked to his mother on his cell phone only when he wanted to give her money from his work. While still living in Lampung, Adjie was known as a son who obeyed his mother in Isal's eyes. 

But every day Adjie always came home at night. Sometimes his face was bruised, his legs were limping, and Isal had seen blood stains on his shirt. But Adjie was a child who respected his mother. After Adjie and his wife got married. He migrated to the city. Adjie said that he worked in a gold shop in the city.

The mother was talking to Adjie on the phone to help Isal find a job, then a few minutes later the mother approached Isal.

Ama: "Ama has called your brother to help him find a job and pay for Ama's treatment, promise Ama not to misbehave in the area later. Find a halal job and don't trouble your brother." 

Isal: "Isal will do anything to get Ama well. Isal promises to send the medical expenses and daily needs while Isal is in Tangerang by the end of this month."

When Isal wanted to go to bed, his mother saw the bruises on his face and asked him what had happened.

Ama: "Oh my gosh Isal, you are fighting again at school, how many times have I told you not to fight, Ama is tired of being called by the principal."

Isal with amusement, he replied: "Sorry Ama, but Isal was just defending himself from Samuel and his friends. He always overreacts to Isal and the other students. Isal just wants to teach Samuel a lesson that Isal is not afraid of him. Isal just wanted to protect the others"

The mother replied: "Your intentions are good, but violence is not the answer."

Then Isal apologized to his mother. He goes to his room to rest and sleep, because tomorrow morning he would take the sea to go to Tangerang. While in the room, Isal had difficulty sleeping because in his heart he was not ready to leave his mother. Then he tried to sleep on the floor of his mother's room, he brought a cloth and pillow to sleep in his mother's room. She wanted to be with his mother before he left and he finally fell asleep.

The next day Isal got ready to leave, she kissed her mother's hand before leaving. Isal immediately hugged his mother.

Ama: "you be careful. Say hello to your brother there."

Isal replied

Isal: "Of course Ama, Ama take good care of yourself while Isal is away."

The uncle who wanted to take Isal ensured that his mother would be taken care of by him and his family while Isal was away. The uncle and Isal then left for the harbor, Isal looked at his mother as he left and waved to her. When they arrived at the harbor Isal told his uncle to please buy his mother's medicines for this month and take good care of her. The uncle replied.

Uncle: "You don't need to worry sal, you just focus on preparing yourself in the big city, because the big city is a harsh and unpredictable place. Never go out without your brother's permission. Because in the big city there are many bad people at night."

Uncle: "Yasudah, you just wait for the ship, Uncle go home first. Here's some money for you to eat after you get off the ship. Later your brother will pick you up in front of the harbor."

Isal took the money and saluted his uncle and thanked him. 1 hour later the ship was ready to depart. Isal then headed for the ship that he would use to go to Tangerang. Isal boarded the ship, he goes to the deck to see the view Lampung before he left.

He closed his eyes and took a deep breath to get rid of the fear. The ship started to run, he breathed out and opened his eyes. The farther away the view of the city began to blur in Isal's eyes. On the way he only saw the blue ocean. The sky had begun to turn orange, the wind, the sound of the waves, and the seabirds accompanied him on the ship.

A few hours later, the ship arrived at Merak Harbor. Isal was getting ready to get off the ship with everyone else. He looked at the scenery around the port, there were people selling, people transporting goods, vehicles leaving and entering the ship. Isal walked out to the port exit. He looked around, but he didn't see his brother.

Isal: "hmmm, maybe he hasn't arrived yet."

Suddenly Isal's stomach rumbled and  hungry. He goes to a food stall to fill his stomach. After he finished eating, he paid for the food with the money his uncle gave him. Isal goes back to the port exit. He looked for his brother around the exit, the parking lot, but he was nowhere to be seen. He waited for several hours, it was already dark, the moon was shining along with the stars, but his brother had not arrived. Isal stayed overnight at the harbor. Isal slept on a bench near the harbor. In the morning; someone woke Isal up.

Person: "hey buddy, wake up."

 Isal's eyes were still blurry as to who had woken him up and he was still not fully awake. The person splashed water on Isal's face. He was shocked and his temper rose. He stood up and swung his fist at the person. The person was able to restrain Isal's hand. Isal immediately asked who he was. The person laughed and said.

Person: "are you serious, you didn't recognize me? Its me you fool."

Isal was surprised that the person who woke him up was his brother, Adjie.

Isal: "oh my god, I thought you were someone else. Bro, you look so different since the last time I saw you."

Adjie replied:

Adjie: "hahaha, well this is the effect of living in the city. "

Adjie and Isal doing the fist bump. Adjie has clean-cut hair with a thin mustache. Adjie wears stylish clothes. Jeans with a black belt, watch, black jacket, loafers, and necklace. Adjie and Isal are 5 years apart. After meeting Isal, Adjie apologized that he was late picking Isal up.

Isal: "Where have you been? I've been waiting for you since yesterday afternoon"

Adjie: "Sorry I'm late bro, I had some work to finish. Have you eaten yet?"

Isal: "I ate yesterday when I was waiting for you to pick me up."

Adjie: "Let's go to my house later. My wife has made food for you."

Adjie and Isal headed to the motorcycle parking lot and left the harbor to head back to Adjie's house in Tangerang. On the way Adjie and Isal had a conversation.

Adjie: "So, how are you, I see your face is bruised."

Isal: "I'm fine. I was just helping my friend Samuel."

Adjie: "Samuel, Abel's little brother?"

Isal: "Yes, do you still remember them?"

Adjie: "Of course I remember those two bar-bar brothers. I always hated them. Do you remember when I fought with Abel?"

Isal: "of course I remember that incident, you were told to sleep outside by dad because you beat up dad's boss's son."

Isal: "how is your wife?"

Adjie: "fine, she's getting hot bro."

They had a good laugh.

Adjie: "so how is Ama?"

Isal: "Her cough is getting worse. Ama no longer works and now lives with her uncle."

Adjie: "sorry, I haven't earned enough money for Ama's treatment."

Isal: "We'll find something together for Ama."

Isal asked Adjie about his job.

Isal: "So, what do you do in the city?"

Adjie didn't respond at first. Then Isal asked again.

Isal: "hey bro."

Adjie answered Isal's question.

Adjie: "uhh, I work as a car washer in the city. Steam washer."

Isal was confused by Adjie's statement.

Isal: "You said that you worked in a gold shop."

Adjie didn't respond to Isal's reply and immediately changed the topic.

Adjie: "My friend is looking for an employee as an internet cafe operator at his place. I told him that you will be working there tomorrow. The salary is good enough to cover this month's medical expenses."

Isal: "but, I don't understand the internet or computers. Why don't I just work with you. Washing vehicles is easier."

Adjie: "Just follow my orders. You're still new here."

Isal agreed and followed Adjie's request. A few hours later. They arrived home. Isal met Leila.
 
Leila: "Isal, it's been a long time since we met. How are you?"

Isal: "I'm fine, Leila."

Leila: "I'm sorry, we both haven't been able to visit Ama. We've been busy lately. Adjie is also having trouble earning money."

Isal: "Isn't the vehicle steam room deserted?"

Isal asked. Leila looked at Adjie and Adjie shook his head as he looked back at Leila.

Leila: "Vehicle steam yes, uh yes your brother's vehicle steam workplace is empty."

Adjie immediately changed the topic.

Adjie: "Let's talk inside. You haven't eaten yet sal, we'll eat after I show you your room."

Adjie shows Isal his bedroom.

Adjie: "This is your room. It's not big, but it's comfortable to sleep in."

Isal: "thanks bro."

Adjie: "Well, you clean up first. When you're done, go to the kitchen to eat together."

Isal tidied up his things in his room. There was a closet, a bed on the floor, and a fan. The room still had traces of dust. Like an unused room. He cleaned the room and put his things away. Just as he was about to put his clothes and belongings in the closet. Isal found a bag containing sharp items in the closet. The bag was hidden. After finishing cleaning up, Isal goes to the kitchen with the bag. As he about to going to the kitchen, Isal heard Adjie and Leila talking.

Leila: "Are you sure you want to work with Jarot. You know how Jarot behaves. Then you also know Jarot's side business in the internet cafe. What if Isal finds out?."

Adjie: "I'll take care of it. I don't want Isal working with me. It's too dangerous. At least I'm sure Jarot's place will keep Isal away from my real job."

Leila: "I have a bad feeling about this. I don't trust Jarot. He's changed since he had that side business."

Adjie: "What else can I do, should I tell him to become a beggar? No, I don't want that. I have no other choice. Besides, his salary is enough to cover the rent and my mother's treatment. Conditions in the city are not good. The incident a few weeks ago has made the police more careful in guarding every corner of the city. I also still have a debt of honor with Jarot."

Isal arrived at the kitchen, but he couldn't hear the conversation clearly. Isal asked what they were discussing.

Isal: "What are you discussing, it seems important. Then who's Jarot?"

Adjie: "Did you hear our conversation earlier?"

Isal: "Only a little. So what. Is there a problem?"

Leila: "Never mind. The food will get cold. Let's eat it Sal. Here, sister Leila has made you sunny side up eggs. Your favorite, right?"
Isal: "eh, I know."

Leila: "Yes. There's fried chicken, tasi uduk, tofu, and tempeh."

Adjie: "Let's eat together."

The three of them ate the food together in the kitchen. After the meal, Isal helped Leila clean the dirty plates and glasses. After washing, Isal goes to the living room. In the living room there was a tube TV, carpet, table and chairs. Isal turns on the TV and there is a news broadcast about the rise in drug use by teenagers and the murder that happened last night. The murder took place near the town which is not far from the city and harbor. Leila, who heard the broadcast, immediately asked Isal to change the broadcast to cartoons.

In the afternoon, adjie took Isal around the city so that Isal could get to know the city areas. Isal admired the downtown area because it had a beautiful view and tall buildings. Unlike the area where Adjie lived, the area had a landscape filled with garbage around the streets and roadsides. 

The smell of dirty rivers and congestion caused by city transportation. Isal told Adjie that the downtown area was nicer than the suburban area where Adjie lived. Isal said that one day he wanted to move and live in the city center with his mother and Adjie. After they finished traveling around the city, they go home to rest.

December 23, 2022. In the morning Adjie woke Isal up to take her to his workplace. Adjie told Isal not to talk or ask many questions when they got there. Adjie told Isal to follow orders and immediately do the order. Adjie told Isal that the most important thing was not to be curious. Adjie made sure Isal understood and understood Adjie's orders. Isal said that he understood, but in his heart, Isal was confused why Adjie told Isa to follow so many rules in a job that was actually a trivial job. They left on Adjie's motorcycle.

Arriving at the place. They entered the internet cafe. Isal saw that the contents of the internet cafe were busy being played by teenagers to adults. Adjie invited Isal to meet the owner of the internet cafe. They go up to the 3rd floor to meet the owner of the internet cafe. When entering the internet cafe owner's room. Isal saw the owner of the internet cafe guarded by two bodyguards. The owner of the internet cafe had clean-cut hair and a nice shirt. There were gold necklaces and watches adorning his body. His face was very intimidating to Isal.

Adjie then introduced Isal to the owner.

Adjie: "This is my younger brother who will later work as your internet cafe operator."

Internet cafe owner: "Ok, what's his name?"

Isal answered immediately.

Isal: "My name is Isal sir."

The owner laughed.

Internet cafe owner: Don't call me sir, I'm still young. Call me bang Jarot instead."

Isal, who heard Adjie and Leila's conversation yesterday, realized that Jarot was the owner of the internet cafe where he would work. Jarot then introduced the contents of the internet cafe and trained Isal to know how to operate the operator's computer. But when Jarot forbade Isal to enter one of the rooms on the first floor. Jarot held Isal's neck and told Isal that the room was only allowed for Jarot, Jarot's friends and senior employees of the internet cafe.

Jarot: "Look kid, I'm warning you from day one. Don't ever go into that room or you'll regret it later. Do you understand?"

Isal: "Of course, of course."

Isal felt threatened by Jarot's order. He had a bad feeling about working with Jarot. After introducing the contents of the internet cafe. Jarot invited Isal to start working. Jarot goes back to his room. Isal then talked to Adjie about her feelings. Adjie told Isal to obey Jarot's orders. Jarot doesn't care about other people. He only cares about his business. As long as Isal obeyed Jarot. Isal wouldn't get into trouble. 

Adjie also told Isal not to be a curious person. Adjie then left Isal with the excuse of going to his workplace. Adjie always came home at night when he worked. Sometimes Isal would ask why he always came home at night, but Adjie was always evasive.

December 31, 2022. More than a week passed after Isal's first day of work. Isal was getting comfortable with his current job, but he still remembered what he was really working for. While he was working. Jarot and his friends were preparing for the New Year's party. They brought women with drinks into the forbidden room. Isal heard the sound of them having a party in the room. Isal watched the news on the TV near the operator's computer. The newscast showed the incident of a robber killing two victims. The incident was not far from the Internet cafe. 

While watching the newscast, Isal saw Jarot coming out of the room. Jarot forgot to close the door to the room. Isal couldn't help being curious about the room and what they were doing in the room. Isal only intended to take a quick peek. When he peeked, Isal saw a lot of chemical materials, vehicle spare parts. Isal was even more curious, why were there so many chemicals and vehicle spare parts in the room. 

What is the relationship between the internet cafe and these items. After peeking more, Jarot suddenly re-entered the room. Isal immediately hid. While hiding Isal saw Jarot with Adjie. Isal saw a blood wound on Adjie's forehead. Then Isal heard the conversation between the two of them.

Adjie: "This is the money from the marijuana and crystal meth packages. I managed to rob two victims. They wanted to fight back, but I didn't mince words. I just shot them directly. Fortunately, the street was quiet. They died on the way. The motorcycle and belongings are in the back."

Jarot: "Good. Clean yourself up and join the party."

Isal was surprised by their conversation. It turned out that one of the robbers and drug dealers in the news was Adjie and Jarot. Isal realized that all this time his brother had been a robber. Isal immediately came out of hiding and confronted Jarot and Adjie. Adjie and Jarot were surprised. Isal was angry with his brother who had been a criminal. Jarot immediately pointed the gun in his pants at Isal. But Adjie told Jarot to lower his weapon. Jarot was disappointed with Isal's curiosity. 

Jarot told Adjie that Isal should be shot, because he already knew too much about their dark business. But Jarot gave Adjie advice if Isal was just included in the dark business members. Adjie did not allow Jarot. He didn't want to risk his brother's life. But Jarot forced and threatened Adjie to include Isal in their Illegal business world.

Isal told Jarot to get himself into the Illegal Bussines. Isal had no other choice to get her mother's medical expenses. Adjie resigned to Isal's choice. Jarot also made Isal a new member in his business. Adjie warned Isal not to get close to Jarot. 

Because Jarot is a figure who likes to stab from behind. Jarot asked Isal to become a drug dealer in the city area. Adjie refused the request and advised Jarot to keep Isal under Adjie's supervision. Jarot agreed. Isal and Adjie will work together as part of the Pembegal.

It was the middle of New Year's Eve. Jarot and Adjie invited Isal to carry out his first mission. Isal was given a sharp weapon. Adjie told Isal to stay behind Isal when robbing. They observed the quiet and dark streets around the edge of the city. That night they met someone they were going to rob. A mother who is riding a motorcycle with her child. Isal was unable to attack the mother and child. Jarot insisted on robbing them. Adjie and Isal got off the vehicle and attacked the mother and child. 

Isal blindfolded the child while Adjie stabbed the mother and they took the mother's jewelry and motorcycle. Isal felt guilty and could not control himself. Adjie told Isal to hurry back to the car. Jarot ordered Isal to kill the boy so that there would be no witnesses. Isal approached the mother's dying child and apologized. With tears in his eyes, Isal stabbed the child. They then left the scene. On the way Jarot told Isal

Jarot: "This is what happens when you become a curious person. The city is harsh, son, you have to do whatever it takes not to starve to death. A village boy like you doesn't have many options in the city. And don't mess with me."

Adjie: "Enough is enough, he's tired of your crazy talk."

Isal was silent. He was silent for the whole journey. He couldn't believe what he had done, what he and his brother had done to pay for his mother's medical treatment in the village. Jarot gave Isal 5 million for his successful work. Isal had never seen so much money, Isal thought about taking the money or not. But he remembered his promise to his mother to provide medical expenses at the end of the month. Finally, Isal accepted the money Jarot gave him. Starting out as a weak defender, Isal's destiny turned into a murderer.

January 14, 2023. Adjie and Isal became fugitives from the city. But that didn't stop them. Isal's personality had changed since the incident on New Year's Eve a few months that week. He wanted more and more money. Jarot asked Adjie and Isal to send a package of drugs to the suburbs. They will be rewarded with 20 million if they succeed in sending the package. Adjie refused Jarot's offer, but Isal accepted the request. Adjie forced Isal not to accept Jarot's offer. 

Adjie is afraid that if Isal accepts the offer, it will end their lives because the city is getting more dangerous for criminals. Jarot keeps tempting them with the offer. The proceeds from the offer could cover medical expenses over a long period of time. Isal accepted the offer. Adjie, who initially refused, resigned himself to Isal's choice.

January 15, 2023. Early at night, Isal and Adjie get ready to send the package. Bodyguard Jarot picks them up at Adjie's house. Isal gave a message to Leila to send the rest of the medical expenses to Mom in Lampung. Adjie and Isal get into the car. Bodyguard Jarot gave them two firearms. 

They leave for their destination. Adjie had a bad feeling that Jarot's bodyguard was using the road that led to the city's harbor. Adjie's feeling was right, that they were going to the harbor. The harbor area is close to the forest, the atmosphere is quiet, and there is minimal lighting.

When they arrived, Jarot's bodyguard gave the package to the two of them. Adjie told Isal to stay behind him. When they arrived at the meeting point. They saw Jarot and his bodyguard in the distance. Adjie and Isal approached Jarot and asked him why he was here and where the buyer of the drug package was. Suddenly there was a gunshot behind them. Isal shocked and looked back.

He heard the gunshot coming from one of Jarot's bodyguards who escorted them. Isal looked at Adjie's face on the side. Isal shocked that the bodyguard shot Adjie in the chest, Adjie fell and died. Isal held the gunshot wound in Adjie's chest. Isal's hands were covered in blood. When Adjie is dying, he said to Isal.

"Adjie: I told you not to accept Jarot's offer. Run Isal, run as far as possible into the forest and never look back."

Adjie breathed his last in Isal's lap. Isal cried and regretted her decision. Isal took the gun that was on his waist and tried to shoot Jarot. But the guns were sabotaged by Jarot's bodyguard. Jarot's bodyguard gave the two of them a gun that had not worked from the beginning of the trip. Jarot told Isal to put the gun down. Jarot pointed the gun at Isal's head. Jarot asked Isal to follow him into the interior of the forest. Isal, Jarot, and his bodyguard walked into the forest near the harbor. Isal asked why Jarot was setting us up.
