May 9 is Victory Day which is celebrated annually in Russia to commemorate the country's victory over the Nazis in 1945. It is the day of the great sacrifice that the Soviet Union made in defeating Nazi Germany in the "Great Patriotic War". Because this is an annual event, Pawi in 2022 will be held again like the previous year. During the celebration, the leader of the Russian state, Vladimir Putin, delivered a speech as usual to cheer up the families of the victims, show the country's empathy for the victims and convey condolences in memory of the fallen soldiers. But apparently something was different this year. It turns out that Putin's speech also briefly discussed his invasion of Ukraine. He also said that NATO is a threat to the Russian state. This statement caused concern around the world because it could lead to a third world war. The following is a discussion of the speech.

The History of The Event

Victory Day, or May 9, is a holiday commemorating the surrender of Nazi Germany to the Soviet Union at the end of World War II, known in the Soviet Union as the Great Patriotic War. The anniversary was celebrated for the first time in the 16 Union Republics after the signing of the surrender documents on the night of May 8, 1945 (after midnight, May 9 Moscow time). The Soviet government declared victory early on May 9 after a signing ceremony in Berlin. Although it was an official holiday in 1945, in 1965 it became the only and only holiday in the Federal Republic. In the German Democratic Republic, 8 May was celebrated as "Liberation Day" from 1950 to 1966 and again on its 40th birthday in 1985. In 1975, "Victory Day" was celebrated in Soviet style on 9 May. Since 2002, the German state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern has celebrated a day of remembrance known as "Day of Liberation from National Socialism and the End of the Second World War". In 1988, before the collapse of the Soviet Union, Uzbekistan celebrated Victory Day, but it was partially restored in 1999 as a day of remembrance. After independence from the Soviet Union, the Baltic countries now celebrate the end of the Second World War on May 8, Victory Day in Europe. Since 2015, Ukraine has joined the Baltic countries in celebrating the end and victory of World War II on Europe Day on May 8 and 9.

In the end, May 9 and 8 were historical days for the Russian state because these days claimed many lives in 1945. But that doesn't mean that Russia only holds parades for fun but to commemorate all those who have died and fought.

Discussion in Putin's Speech

In this year's speech, Putin, the country's leader, discussed several topics that worried the world. The reason is that he discussed his invasion of Ukraine, the desire to make peace with the west through NATO, and NATO itself which is the biggest threat to the Russian state.

as we know Russia's invasion of Ukraine was carried out on February 24, 2022. Putin said that this was not a war but only a special military operation. When the declaration of this invasion was echoed, missiles from Russia aimed and fell on Ukraine and on its capital, Kyiv. The land invasion was not spared by Russia from various directions to Ukraine. Zelensky instituted martial law and general mobilization that did not allow men aged 18-60 to leave the country. Russia launched an offensive via a northern front from Belarus to Kyiv, a northwestern front towards Kharkiv, a southern front from Crimea, and a southeastern front from the cities of Luhansk and Donetsk. In March 2022, Russia's attack on Kyiv stopped. Due to heavy troop deaths and strong Ukrainian resistance, Russian forces withdrew from Kyiv Oblast on April 3, 2022. On April 19, Russia launched another offensive on a 500-kilometer (300 mi) front from Kharkiv to Donetsk and Luhansk, with offensives missiles on Kyiv in the north and Lviv in the west simultaneously. Massive protests have been made the world over the invasion. Many countries in the world think this is a heinous thing and even the UN demands Russia to withdraw its troops. However, this does not make Putin afraid because he thinks this is in the interests of his country. In a television address before the invasion, Vladimir Putin, the Russian president, expressed views of Russian irredentism, questioned Ukraine's sovereign rights, and falsely claimed that Ukraine was dominated by neo-Nazists who tortured Russians in Ukraine. The conflict began with massive military preparations, starting from March to April 2021 and then from October 2021 to February 2022. During the second military preparation, Russia made demands on the United States and NATO, through two draft agreements containing requests for so-called “guarantee security". Prior to the attack, Putin and Kremlin officials made a long series of accusations against Ukraine and charges against Ukraine and NATO in what Western officials have described as an attempt to justify war. On February 18, Russian Ambassador to the United States Anatoly Antonov accused the United States of tolerating forced Russian cultural assimilation in Ukraine. In his Feb. 21 speech, Putin said that Ukrainian society "was faced with a rise in right-wing nationalism, which quickly developed into Russophobia and aggressive neo-Nazism.".

Despite right-wing (political) leanings in Ukraine such as the neo-Nazi Azov Battalion and Right Sector, Putin's looks are explosive and this ideology has not yet been used in government, military or electoral support. Specifically, in response to Russian claims, Ukrainian-Jewish President Zelensky stated that his grandfather served in the Soviet army against the Nazis; Three members of his family died in the Holocaust. The US Holocaust Memorial Museum condemns Putin's misuse of Holocaust history to justify war. During the second preparations, Russia made demands to the United States and NATO, such as a legally binding promise that Ukraine would not join NATO and a reduction in NATO troops and navies in Eastern Europe. In addition, Russia threatens sudden military strikes if NATO continues its "aggressive line"

This claim has been widely interpreted as unreasonable; new members of NATO join (NATO) because their people want to move towards the security and economic opportunities offered by NATO and the European Union and away from Russia. Demands for a formal agreement to prevent Ukraine from joining NATO were also deemed inappropriate, although NATO has shown no intention of accepting Ukraine's offer of membership.

Putin stated that "Ukraine has never had a real statehood tradition" and that the Soviet Union made a mistake in creating it. The international community rejects Putin's claims. In particular, claims of Russian genocide in Ukraine have been widely dismissed as baseless. The EU Commission also dismissed the allegations as "Russian disinformation". The US Embassy in Ukraine has branded the Russian genocide a "cheap lie". US State Department spokesman Ned Price said Moscow used the claim as a pretext to attack Ukraine. Observers say Putin concocted a "false Nazi narrative" to use bad memories and World War II cooperation in German-occupied Ukraine to justify Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

In December 2021, Putin spoke out about discrimination against Russian speakers outside Russia, saying:
"I must say that Russophobia is the first step towards genocide." On February 15, 2022, Putin told the press:
"What happened in Donbass is genocide". The Russian government has also criticized the Ukrainian language law.

The draft agreement includes legally binding promises that Ukraine will not join NATO, reducing NATO troops and combat equipment stationed in Eastern Europe, and threatening to take unspecified military action if NATO continues to stay on the "aggressive line".

NATO is an organization of military alliances between many countries consisting of 2 countries in North America, 27 European countries and 1 Eurasian country that aims for mutual security which was founded in 1949. said that in December last year Russia wanted honest dialogue and in-depth discussion of common interests but Putin hit it with the word "for nothing". Putin thinks that NATO is starting to threaten Russia's sovereignty because he knows there is another purpose from seeing NATO countries that don't want to discuss and even start taking over military control close to Russian territory.

Media That Displays The Speech

1. CNBC INDONESIA

CNBC Indonesia is the first long-time mass media that I saw featuring or quoting this speech from Putin. They quoted the speech and translated it into Indonesian. The page is titled " Rayakan Hari Kemenangan Rusia, Ini Isi Pidato Lengkap Putin ". Even though it only translated Putin's speech, the CNBC media really helped the Indonesian people who did not understand Russian or English.

CNBC INDONESIA displays from its website page about this speech, they say:
"Putin said that the military strike he launched was necessary. According to him, the attack, which he called a military operation, was a form of a strong state in confronting threats, including from the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) alliance." -CNBC INDONESIA.

2. KOMPAS TV

KOMPASTV displays the speech with subtitles placed below the video. This channel displays videos as well as a few reviews or repetitions of the speeches delivered by Putin on its website. The page is titled " Pidato Lengkap Vladimir Putin di Perayaan Hari Kemenangan Rusia ". KOMPAS TV also helps the author to see the original speech from when Putin stepped onto the podium to give a speech on May 9. There will be shown a video recording of Putin for more than 2 minutes which also directly translates what Putin said in the recorded video.

KOMPASV displays from its website page about this speech, they say:

Putin commented on military action in Ukraine and responded to policies from western countries.
"Absolutely unacceptable threats have been made to us, and moreover, right next to our borders. Everything indicates that a clash with the neo-Nazis, the Banderites, on which the United States and its younger partners are betting, is inevitable, "Putin said quoted from APTN. -KOMPASTV.

they also quoted lines from Putin's speech encouraging the Russian soldiers not to flinch and boosting their morale

3. BBC NEWS INDONESIA

On the BBC NEWS INDONESIA page entitled " Putin katakan Rusia berjuang untuk 'tanah air, jaya bagi kemenangan, hore,' Zelensky tuduh Moskow ulangi kekejaman Nazi ", they discuss Rusia's invasion of Ukraine. On this page, Putin said that the military operation, which is called a special operation, was important because of a provocation from the West. It is also rumored that Putin will convey big things such as war or other things. But quoted from BBC NEWS INDONESIA, they say that the speech that Putin made on May 9 was mostly to defend his invasion of Ukraine.

On this page it is also explained that there are accusations imposed by Ukraine, namely the accusation of Ukraine against Russia for "Nazizm".

"In speech commemorating World War II, Zelensky says Russian army is replicating Nazi "atrocities" in invasion of his country" - BBC NEWS INDONESIA

This page also describes the victims of the Putin invasion. He remained adamant that doing so was a sacred thing because he was defending his country. Before Putin's speech, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky accused Russia of trying to "reconstruct Nazism". This statement is in contrast to the claims of Russian President Vladimir Putin, who argued that the attack on Ukraine was his country's attempt to fight the "Nazis". Zelensky is believed to be trying to win the hearts of European countries, including Britain, France and the Netherlands through this speech. He likened the Nazi bombings of Western Europe to Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Zelensky is also mentioned here asking for help to the G7 countries and they agreed to help Ukraine in the invasion. Examples of this assistance include stopping oil supplies to Russia, sending military aid, and visits to places close to Kyiv.

Responses From Various Countries

1. French and German

The speech indeed caused an uproar in the world, including these two countries, namely France and Germany. The responses of the two countries were represented by their respective heads of state.

the two countries responded to Putin's speech on Monday, May 9 with gratitude and relief because Putin did not mention the escalation of war. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz told reporters in Berlin Monday, (9/5/2022), it was important there was no escalation, "at least as far as the rhetoric is concerned" in Putin's Victory Day speech.-KompasTV

His comments were echoed by French President Emmanuel Macron, who added the aim of the diplomatic effort remained a ceasefire in Ukraine. The French president also added that they still intend to fulfill their main goal, namely a ceasefire and help Ukraine to negotiate under the terms they decided on themselves, especially since France is on the side of Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity.

2. Britain

British Defense minister Ben Wallace said that President Vladimir Putin looked desperate while delivering a speech on Russia's Victory Day on Monday (9/5). The statement was quoted from CNN Indonesia.
"I think he believes what he wants to believe, it looks a little desperate," Wallace said, as reported by CNN.

Wallace made this statement because of Putin's speech which continued to blame NATO and according to Putin, the defense bloc continued to attract its neighbors to become members of NATO. Then the British defense minister emphasized that only six percent of Russia's entire border is directly adjacent to NATO member countries.

Quotes From Putin's speeches That I Like

In his speech, Putin offered his condolences to those who had died and made sacrifices. The speech expressed his gratitude to them as Putin usually does on May 9th anniversary. But something is different this year. Namely about the issue of Russia declaring war. This issue caused an uproar in the world because it could lead to World War 3 which would result in more fatalities than the previous wars.
In this speech after delivering a speech regarding Russia's victory over the Nazis, Putin also conveyed how NATO became the biggest threat in Russia's territory. He explained that Russia had been looking for ways to compromise with western countries but all in vain.
NTO paid no heed to Russia so Putin concluded that there were other intentions invading Crimea.

"I am now addressing our Armed Forces and Donbas volunteers. You are fighting for the Fatherland, for its future, so that no one forgets the lessons of the Second World War. So that there is no place in the world for executioners, punishers and Nazis." said Putin-CNBC Indonesia.

In this sentence we can see that Putin is celebrating his enthusiasm for the soldiers, he also brought Nazism to this speech.

"Despite differences of opinion in international relations, Russia has always advocated the creation of an equal and indivisible security system, a system that is vital to the entire international community".

"In December last year, we proposed concluding an agreement on security guarantees. Russia called on the West to enter into an honest dialogue, find reasonable compromise solutions, take into account each other's interests. Everything was in vain."

In this quote, Putin explains that his country, namely Russia, is a country that often advocates an equal and inseparable security system. He also said that in December last year they had held negotiations with the West but still this had no effect. Russia also wants the West to enter into an honest dialogue, find a reasonable compromise solution, to consider each other's interests which are important so as not to create a conflict that leads them to war.

"NATO countries don't want to listen to us, meaning they actually have completely different plans, and we see this. Openly, preparations are underway for another punitive operation in the Donbass, an invasion of our historical lands, including Crimea.- CNBC INDONESIA.

reported by CNBC INDONESIA, they displayed Putin's statement so I interpreted the quote to be Putin's concern about NATO countries that could threaten his country's defense.  As putin said in the quote:

"In Kyiv, they announced the possibility of acquiring nuclear weapons, the NATO bloc began to actively take military control of the territories adjacent to us. Thus, an absolutely unacceptable threat to us was systematically created, and even more so directly on our borders".-CNBC INDONESIA.

Putin lays out the reasons for his concern about exposing NATO mistakes to Russia. Here NATO has created a military base close to the Russian border and as we know that NATO is a force from the USA which makes Putin's worries even worse.

"The death of each of our soldiers and officers is our shared grief and an irreparable loss for their friends and relatives. The state, region, companies and public organizations will do everything to care for and help this family. We will provide special support, for the child -children of comrades who were killed and injured. The Presidential Decree on this was signed today." said putin quoted from the BBC NEWS INDONESIA page".

In this dialogue, Putin displays his concern about the loss of soldiers' lives and those left behind by these soldiers. He also explained the solution to this problem, which is to help financially and other things that are borne by his country.
