What defines our identity? Identity paints a picture of a person through physical appearance, racial features, skin color, language used, self-assessment, and other perceptual elements, all of which are used in the construction of cultural identity. Living in a city where people mainly come to pursue further education, people from many different areas tend to come to my city. People's identity can often be recognized from their dialects and their characters.
My nationality is Indonesian and I am Javenese, This is a part of my identity. Javanese people are usually known as soft and really polite. We prioritize how to behave and be well mannered. Keeping good manners is a common Javanese practice. Either to someone younger or older. They also respect ethics when interacting with the local populations. Javanese people are also accustomed to bowing in courtesy and respect while passing older or more respected persons.
The way we dress can also be a part of our identity. What we wear usually represents who we really are. Fashion is a part of expressing ourselves, it could be our own personal branding. If we dress more sophisticated people tend to respect us more. Fashion or apparel is an artifact that can be used by an individual to communicate his or her identity nonverbally. Traditional clothes can also show our identity, for example women who are Javanese wears kebaya and men wears beskap.
