Based on my observation since I was at elementary school up to now to my senior high, there are some reasons why, generally speaking, many students do not like or do not enjoy reading.Â
1. Only at the first years during my elementary school we the students enjoyed reading our text books since there were books with pictures on the pages. We liked that kind of book.Â
However, at the 5th and 6th grades, it was no longer the same. The text books became gradually boring. We didn't have other books to read other that our text books. To make it even harder, there was only one book for every two students. We had to share, meaning, I couldn't always have the book with me, only every other night. Â
2. During my junior high, 7-9 grades, the students didn't really read books other than the text books. We did since we were asked to do so while we were in class or at home to do our homework. Other than those activities, I can now say that we didn't really read those kind of school text books. Â
3. It is about the same with my experience during my junior high and now at senior high. The different is only to do with the availability of books in the library. While I was at my junior high, at a state school, the only time I went into the library was when returning text book in to the library. I did notice that all books there were text books. It was also not opened for us students. Now, during my high senior, which is a private school, luckily, the library is open and there are books students can borrow: only one book for three days duration. If you return it after the three days, you get to pay 500, Rp., per day; you get a fine! Â
4. It does look to me that students, being not enthusiastic to read their school textbooks, they then tend to think that reading is not a fun thing to do. They already had such an unpleasant experience engaging with their school text books.Â
It affects them along the way, believing that reading is not really for them, or it is not a great thing to do, unfortunately. Â That's why encouraging and supporting children from early age, as early as possible to build a habit to read is one of the most precious gift any child can get.
I myself enjoy reading. I read books other than text books since my elementary years. I used to read BOBO Magazine sent from Jakarta by my dad's sister who lived there and still is. I also read books other than Bobo as well. I do consider myself lucky.***
