Low Intereset in Education in Adolescents

Introduction

 Human existence is described through phases of development and progress from the earliest stages to death. Among the phases of change there is adolescence, which is the period of movement from children to adults, at this stage growth is very important to note, one of which is Education.

 

Education is a major milestone in the formation of cultured individuals and societies, but the reality experienced today shows serious challenges related to low interest in education in adolescents, this problem is related to the modernization era which is filled with distractions and demands of life that make the collapse of interest in education in adolescents.

 Ahmad (2016) argues that education is an interactive human process with an open and planned environment and develops physically (physically) and mentally (thoughts, feelings, intentions, works, creativity and consciousness) that causes positive changes and cognitive, emotional, and psychological progress to achieve future life goals. Meanwhile, according to Sugihartono et al. (Irham and Wiyani, 2016), Education is a conscious and planned effort carried out by educators to change people's behavior, both individually and in groups to mature the person through the process of teaching and training.

Understanding Youth 

Understanding adolescence seen from a psychological point of view, adolescence is a transitional period that a person goes through from children to adults. Adolescence is a period of human development. This stage is a time of change or transition from childhood to adulthood which includes biological changes, psychological changes, and social changes. Adolescence is often defined as the transition between childhood and adulthood. 

Adolescence is often known as a period of self-discovery, which Erikson calls ego-identity. This happens because adolescence is a transitional period in terms of physicality, they are treated like adults, but they do not seem to be able to show a mature attitude. From all the notions of adolescence mentioned above, it can be concluded that adolescence is a transition period from childhood to adulthood, through a period of mental and emotional, emotional, physical, and social development.

Understanding Educational Interest  

  Interest in the Great Dictionary Indonesian, is "High heart inclination towards something, passion, and desire" Interest is the willingness of the soul whose nature is active to accept something from outside. There is also an opinion that interest is an increase in individual attention to an object that has a lot to do with him. Interest, in other opinions, is a feeling of liking related to a reaction to something particular or a certain situation. So with interest will appear a tendency in individuals to focus their attention and increase their activities in an effort to achieve an object.

Education is the key to the progress of a nation and is an issue that is always interesting to study. The definition of education according to the Law on National Education System no. 20 of 2003, is as a conscious and planned effort to create a learning atmosphere and learning process in such a way that students can develop their potential actively in order to have self-control, intelligence, skills in society, religious spiritual strength, personality and noble morals. The Big Dictionary Indonesian explains that education comes from the word "educate" and gets affixes in the form of the prefix 'pe' and the suffix 'an' which means the process or way of doing education. So the definition of education according to language is a change in the behavior and attitude of a person or group of people in an effort to mature humans through training and teaching. 

 

Descriptive education  

 

Education is defined as a series of processes in which a person develops abilities, attitudes, and other forms of behavior that are valuable or useful in society. Education is also defined as a social process in which people or children are subjected to an environment that is deliberately chosen and controlled (for example by teachers in schools) so that they acquire optimal social skills and individual development

Factors Causing Low Interest in Education in Adolescents  

• Adolescent apathy

 From several studies conducted in several regions, factors were found to be the cause of low interest in education in adolescents, one of which is the absence of interest and desire to continue education because education is considered to require a long time and large funds, Therefore, usually after feeling enough at a certain level of education, a person will choose to work in order to make money for himself or for his family.

 As an example of the case with Irwandi Buamona. Interviews with informants explained that they would rather not go to college because they had to go to high school alone. Preferring to directly bring in cash through dad's business, school people are also looking for jobs to make money (Interview, May 22, 2021). A similar case also happened to Mahmud's informant, who said that not continuing to attend college on the grounds for him it was just an abuse of time, on the grounds that his mother and father did not forbid not to go to college. In another study, there was also an opinion that there was no guarantee that there would be a better job if he continued to pursue higher education.

• Internal Factors
• No inspiration and desire to learn

              Inspiration is something that appears in humans inspiration as a human work that has received a response to encourage the spirit of inspiration in a certain relationship to be moved in doing something because it is necessary to achieve the ideal goal. Inspiration plays an important role in the learning system to follow and encourage the learners to learn.

Students should carry out basic learning happily because of the inspiration of each other.

 

• Lack of awareness/motivation towards the importance of higher education.

Lack of awareness towards the importance of higher education as they consider higher education to be a waste of time and money. Judging from the educational background, parents can only finish high school (SMA) and even elementary school (SD) and do not understand the function of higher education. Higher education will also aim to make money so that they are better off taking advantage of their opportunities to work which is clearly their income materially than continuing higher education. The desire to continue to higher education is very low, the pessimistic attitude that college only consumes time, energy, thoughts and costs plus not necessarily getting a job is deeply rooted in their minds and minds.

• The economic state of society

The financial element has a very important role in terms of education, the cost of daily necessities that have a high value and are not in accordance with one's income makes them (someone who is lacking in finance) decide not to continue their education and choose to work to provide for themselves and their families. In an interview conducted (May 27, 2021) by Mr. Ruslan S. Jauhar revealed. Usually people here generally work as fishermen, get fish and then offer them to the market. Sometimes the compensation is not exceptional. For people who have a lot of fish, it is just a problem, but for people who do not have many fish it is difficult to move, so it is difficult to send a child to school level

• Peer influence

The child's social environment is one of the dominant factors, because children who do not continue higher education will be attracted to social friends who do not continue higher education and can earn their own money to buy the things they want. It turns out that children's interactions with their peers have a social influence that makes them want to follow the habits that exist in the social environment (social friends).

Children who do not continue higher education are essentially assimilated with children who do not continue higher education. Their social interaction is seen when they work by helping parents at home, spending time after work, traveling, and spending time with their social friends. Environmental factors are where adolescents interact with friends or groups.

• Environmental influences

Environmental factors are where teens interact with friends or groups. The results of the relationship with the environment also affect the way adolescents think and interest in something, including their interest in education in higher education. Usually his friends do not continue their studies until they enter university, usually they also work in the village with their parents and some work in the city. And we know that his friends at home also do not go to college to find work, they have planned in advance, this shows that the interest of adolescents to continue education is also influenced by environmental and environmental factors.

Methodology

This study uses a qualitative approach to describe the data, making it descriptive in nature. The literature study method used in this study focuses on reading and studying journals and articles to gather information about the issue or topic under investigation

Conclusion

 [1][i]It can be concluded that many factors influence why many adolescents have a low interest in education. The apathy possessed by adolescents makes them reluctant to continue their education to a higher level
