Generation Z, growing up in the digitally advanced era, often becomes the target of criticism and disapproval from the generations that precede them. To understand this phenomenon, let's examine the characteristics and perceptions of some previous generations.

1. Baby Boomer: Stubborn and Mentally Strong

Baby boomers, who lived through the wartime era, even though Indonesia had already gained independence, developed a strong-willed and resilient character. They viewed living in that period as a stroke of luck, leaving a positive impact on their lives. Faced with the challenges of war with courage, baby boomers tend to value mental strength as a paramount quality.

2. Gen X: Tough Economy and Intense Competition

Gen X, as the generation following the baby boomers, faced economic challenges. The difficulty of finding jobs and intense competition, especially among peers, shaped their result-oriented character. This approach led them to be criticized by baby boomers who might perceive it as a lack of sacrifice, instead seeing it as a willingness to do whatever it takes.

3. Millennials: Transition from Analog to Digital

The millennial generation came of age during the transition from analog to digital. With access to social media, they became more aware of work-life balance and mental health. The trauma of the strict upbringing by baby boomers made them more concerned about mental well-being. However, their focus on results and the courage to voice themselves on social media can lead to tension with the previous generation.

4. Gen Z: Mental Well-being and Resistance to Criticism

Our main topic, Gen Z, lives in the digital age, displaying a high awareness of mental well-being. While awareness of mental health is a positive step, unfortunately, they often resist criticism and other people's opinions. Rejecting the opinions of others creates tension with the previous generation.

Response and Acceptance of Differences

It is crucial to remember that every generation faces criticism from the preceding generation. Being open to criticism and suggestions is the key to building intergenerational understanding. While differences in opinions may arise, the awareness that each generation has its own values and challenges can help foster constructive dialogue.

In dealing with intergenerational disagreements, it is important to recognize that the evolution of values and attitudes is a natural process. Over time, the perspectives and priorities of generations may change, and this diversity should be appreciated as part of social and cultural progress.

Facing generational disagreements requires a recognition of the natural evolution of values and attitudes. By being open to criticism, embracing differences, and acknowledging the changing perspectives over time, we can cultivate a more inclusive and understanding dialogue that contributes to social and cultural advancement.
