Environmental problems are urgent problems, especially nowadays, ranging from large-scale loggers, buildup of liars, melting poles, garbage, endangered animals, pollution, global warming and many more. The increasing number of people, the increasing human needs that encourage humans to use natural resources for use.

It's just that there are still many people who are greedy and actually exploit nature and cause an imbalance between humans and nature. But not a few humans are trying to maintain a balance between nature. This concern can be seen from the emergence of Non-Government Organizations everywhere that voluntarily maintain environmental stability.

In Yogyakarta, there are several NGOs working in the environmental sector, such as @4k.yogyakarta that focuses on sea turtle conservation at Pelangi Beach, Yogyakarta; @byebyeplasticbagsjogja that focus on plastic waste issue, and @animalfriendjogja that focus on animal welfare around Yogyakarta.

World Wide Fund

On an international scale, there is a Non Government Organization called WWF or World Wild Fund which is a Non Government Organization (NGO) which is a United State Public Charity that focuses on reducing press threats to diversity of life on earth such as rare animals, poaching, overfishing. , plastic waste on the ocean that endangered animal sea, animal that misused as entertainment, deforestation, bycatch, water scarcity and so on.

These wild animals include pandas, tigers, lions, sea turtles, penguins, rhinos, whales, elephants, zebras, dolphin, leopard, and many more. Of course, an organization like this also has many challenges, such as businessmen opening new land in the forest or building a factory, people who are indifferent to environmental issues, global warming, disaster, and even challenges from cultural traditions that have been passed down from generation to generation.

Fin soup tradition in China

From the culture challenge for example is the tradition in panda country or we called as China, there is a tradition where they consume fin shark that turn into a soup. This tradition has existed since the Song dynasty which symbolizes luxury and wealth and is still practiced today.

Of course this is a challenge for NGOs working to suppress animal extinction. This has been a matter of controversy for a long time, where sharks are sea animals that have an important role in the food chain in the sea to maintain the stability of the marine ecosystem. based on a report from https://www.speakingchange.org/ an estimate of around 73 million sharks killed to take their fins for consumption.

Whaling tradition in Lamalera

The other example is the whaling. Whale itself is known as a marine mammal and also the largest animal that still exists today. Whales have an important role in marine ecosystems as well as sharks. Only whales have a larger size, whales also maintain the circulation of nutrients, plantons, and fish in the ocean.

In some developed countrym such Alaska and Russia has this tradition, but they have the official permission to continue the tradition. different things that can be found in Lamalera, East Nusa Tenggara. This tradition still cointue not jus because it is only a tradition but also because of the need for food which is believed to have existed for hundreds of years before. In Indonesia itself there is no regulation to hunt whales.

The whales that are often hunted by the Lamalera community are sperm whales which are included in the list of endangered whales. Besides whales, dolphins are also hunted for consumption. things like this of course become homework for environmental organizations while they strive for diversity of animal that is a challenge by tradition and culture that is rooted in a certain community. One of the things that are being tried to reduce this whale scavenging is whale watching tours for the tourist.

This effort has not been able to erase the existing tradition but it can reduce the whaling itself.
