Belajar bahasa Inggris tidak cukup hanya dengan memhami tata bahasa (grammar), mengetahui beberapa ungkapan yang lazim digunakan juga wawasan yang perlu di gali. Kemampuan berbahasa dengan memakai ungkapan (idiom) sangatlah berguna, hal ini dapat membantu kita agar bisa berbicara lebih santai dan alami layaknya penutur asli (native speaker).
Berikut ini ada beberapa idiom yang bermanfaat untuk diketahui. Let's get started!
1. Bend Over Backwards (Mencoba sekuat tenaga)
Example :
When she first tried swimming, she didn't really want to do it. She was afraid that she would have trouble. We bent over backwards to help her, then she made it.
2. Spill the Beans (membocorkan/memberi tahu)
Example :
I wanted to give a surprise for my girlfriend, but somebody spilled the beans before I could even tell her.
3. Drive Someone Up a Wall (membuat marah/berisik)
Example :
The music is so loud that I can't even close my eyes. It's midnight already! they are driving me up the wall.
4. Get Off Someone's Back (Menganggu/usil)
Example :
He needs to study for the exam. Get off her back, she might get angry at you, Jane.
5. All Thumbs (Kelihatan kaku/canggung)
Example :
Look at him! he is all thumbs because he is so nervous to meet her fiancee
6. Pull Someone's Leg (membodoh-bodohi dengan cerita palsu/mengada-ngada)
Example :
Rizka told me that she is invited to be a presenter for a famous TV program. I guess she pulled my leg. I didn't really trust her.
7. Tounge-in-Cheek (Bercanda)
Example :
I am so sorry, Lisa. I was simply making a tongue-in-cheek remark when I told you the news. Don't take offense at what I said. I didn't really mean it!
8. For the Birds (membosankan/tidak menarik)
Example:
I just listened to the music, but it was for the birds. I could have wasted my time.
9. Fishy (mencurigakan/aneh)
Example :
I heard a noise from the store nearby an hour ago, it seemed to me that it was something fishy going on
10. Smell a rat (menyakini ada yang tidak beres)
example :
I thought I closed the door when we left. It's unlocked now! I smell a rat.
