Middle Distance

Last night you walked into my dream

And in that dream

You stood seven feet apart from me

We were close enough for me to know what a distance felt like

Between us, a sea of lighters stretched to infinity

And the entire constellations flicker and flutter about us

Should there be another astral collision

It would be a starburst of you and me

You looked away and yet your stubborn smile left its trace among the stardust

There were longings lost among the stars

There were words torched in the burning silence

I was tied to the gravity of my doubts

And you were hesitant to stretch your hand through the stellar chaos

We were just two stars that almost collided but missed

You walked out of my dream last night

As sudden as you walked into my life then

In that dream,

I was left alone collecting every trace of you in a jar

The butterflies I had when your eyes met mine

The smile you gave in a crowded room

The laughter we shared to mock the cruel world

In that dream,

I stayed behind stringing together the memory of you into a constellation

And do you remember the smile you left among the stardust?

I wrapped it with every poem I wrote and scattered them into the sky

Should you find your eyes wondering into the sky lost among the stars

I hope you notice there is one constellation in the shape of your smile
