Siti Manggopoh: The Indomitable Woman Warrior
By Leni Marlina
History sings your name, Siti Manggopoh,
Among the honored women in our nation's lore.
Born on May 1st, 1880, in Lubuk Basung's land,
Within Minangkabau's embrace, you took your stand.
As you blossomed, you became a shield,
For the people whose freedoms were cruelly sealed.
In the darkest times, you did not bow,
Instead, you rose, with courage your vow.
With gentle eyes and a heart of steel,
You faced the oppressors with unyielding will,
A shining pride for the nation to feel.
A fearless fighter in the Belasting War,
In Kamang, Agam, your bravery soared.
You battled the grip of taxes so cruel,
Refusing to bend, refusing their rule.
On Manggopoh's soil, you stood unafraid,
With a fire within that would never fade.
When taxes crushed and the people cried,
You rose, defying the bitter tide,
Though women's freedom was still so denied.
In the shadowed nights of Dutch tyranny,
You lit a flame for all to see.
With a woman's heart and wisdom keen,
You pierced their defenses, swift and unseen.
Fifty-three soldiers fell in silence deep,
As you struck in the night while they lay asleep.
Your clever mind, untouched by deceit,
Though with your child, Dalima, you sought retreat.
Blessed by your husband, you fled through the trees,
Seventeen days in the forest breeze.
Even in prison, you stood tall and true,
With dignity intact, your strength shone through.
A warrior, a leader, fearless and bright,
On the battlefield, you showed no fright.
Oh, Mother Siti Manggopoh, forever revered,
In monuments and history, your name is endeared.
You inspire us still, your legacy clear.
With love and respect, this poem we give,
In honor of the life you dared to live.
Mother Siti Manggopoh, your name will never fade,
In hearts and history, your light will pervade.
Not only in Minangkabau's hills so grand,
But across the breath of our beloved land.
