Who doesn’t know Belva Devara? Yup, Adamas Belva Syah Devara, M.P.A., M.B.A. or as known as Belva Devara is a successful entrepreneur in the field of education. He is CEO of the famous education tutoring that called Ruangguru. Recenlty, Ruangguru held a very interesting program, namely “Clash of Champions” which aims to compete the intelligence of selected students.
Personal Backgorund:
Adamas Belva Syah Devara was born in Jakarta, May 30th 1990. He is the first of three children. Belva is an alumnus from Islamic Al-Azhar 8 Junior High School, and Presiden Senior High School. Then, he continued his study at Nanyang Technological University Singapore, which is one of the best technology university in Asia. During his higher education, Belva achieved many achivements in the academic field, for instance he got Double Dean’s List, computer science and bussiness courses. In 2009, Belva was sellected from the university to parcipate in students exchange to Manchester University, Inggris.
In short, he had the opportunity to enroll as a visiting student at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Belva is also cross-registered as a student at other faculties at Harvard University, including Harvard Law School, Harvard Medical School, and Harvard Graduate School of Education. He is also an active researcher (Fellow) at the Harvard Ash Center for Democratic Governance and Innovation.
Business and career path:
In 2014, Belva and his friend Iman Usman co-founded Ruangguru while Belva was still a student at Stanford and Harvard. The business started off as an internet marketplace that matched students with individual tutors. In order to meet the unique demands of the Indonesian market, it eventually expanded into a full education technology firm that provided a range of services, including interactive video courses, live coaching, and test preparation resources.
The goal of Ruangguru is to democratize education, particularly in Indonesia, where many rural students still have difficulties getting access to excellent educational materials. Belva has been leading the company's rapid growth. It provided services for K–12 education, career training, and even professional development, reaching over 30 million students by 2023. The platform today employs tens of thousands of instructors and has given rise to a whole online education sector.
Achievements and Recognition:
Belva has received multiple honours and recognition for his work with Ruangguru from both domestic and foreign sources. Ruangguru, under his leadership, has grown to be one of Southeast Asia's most successful education technology companies. Beyond its digital platform, Belva works with Ruangguru, the Indonesian government, and other partners to carry out various education reforms and projects aimed at raising the standard of public education.
Belva has worked for President Joko Widodo as a Presidential Special Staff Member in addition to his role at Ruangguru. After being appointed in 2019, Belva concentrated on offering the government advice on matters pertaining to innovation, youth empowerment, and education. However, in 2020, he left the job to devote all of his attention to Ruangguru due to public criticism on possible conflicts of interest between his leadership position at the firm and his official duty.
