Gambling has always been a controversial topic in society. However, with the advent of internet technology, gambling has changed its face dramatically. Online gambling or online gambling has become a multi-billion dollar industry that reaches millions of people around the world.

While many are in favor of it as a form of entertainment, there are strong arguments on how online gambling can ruin people's lives. In recent years, Indonesia has witnessed the rise of the online gambling industry, with the rapid growth of online gambling sites offering various types of games such as poker, sports betting, casinos, and so on. However, this development has given rise to several issues and challenges that affect Indonesian society and government as a whole. In this article, we will explore the detrimental effects of online gambling on people's lives.

1. Addiction and Mental Disorders

One of the most damaging effects of online gambling is addiction. While many gamblers can play wisely, many get stuck in a deep hole of dependency. Online gambling sites are designed in such a way that they stimulate the brain in a way that keeps players coming back for more. In an attempt to recoup their losses or seek the thrill of winning, many people get caught up in never-ending online gambling. This can lead to serious financial problems and mental disorders such as depression, anxiety, and severe stress.

2. Financial Issues

Online gambling can ruin a person's finances quickly. In some cases, people can lose their entire savings in a short period. In an attempt to chase losses or seek thrills, many online gamblers fall into unpaid debts. This can result in financial stress, family splits, and even the loss of homes and valuable assets.

3. Influence on Family and Social Relationships

Online gambling can also damage relationships within the family and with friends. People caught up in online gambling often spend more time in front of their computers or mobile devices than with family and friends. This can lead to social isolation, domestic discord, and deep feelings of loneliness.

4. Misuse of Public Funds

One of the serious problems with online gambling is that most sites operate without strict oversight. This means that misuse of public funds or funds that should be used for the public good can occur. Some online gambling sites may even be a platform for laundering money from illegal activities. This misuse is detrimental to society as a whole and can undermine the financial integrity of a country.

5. Influence on the younger generation

Online gambling also has a damaging influence on the younger generation. With easier access to gambling sites, children and teenagers can easily fall into the trap of online gambling. This can result in future financial instability, as well as mental and emotional health issues. In addition, online gambling can also undermine the values and morality instilled in the younger generation.

6. Gambling-Related Crimes

The online gambling industry is also often the target of gambling-related crimes, such as fraud, money laundering, and other illegal activities. This can undermine the overall security of society and may affect the country's economy.

7. Lack of Protection and Regulation

One of the crucial issues in the online gambling industry is the lack of adequate protection and regulation. Many countries do not have a strong enough legal framework to oversee and regulate the operations of online gambling sites. This results in unauthorized or fraudulent sites easily operating unhindered. When there is no strong regulation, consumers become vulnerable to fraud and manipulation that can damage them financially and emotionally.

8. Causes of Emotional Instability and Mental Health

Online gambling often brings high levels of stress, especially when one experiences heavy losses. Losing streaks or financial difficulties can result in emotional instability and mental health issues, such as depression, anxiety, and even suicidal thoughts. The inability to control online gambling can also be a source of shame and low self-esteem, which only exacerbates mental health issues.

9. Misuse of Personal Data and Security

When someone signs up for an online gambling site, they often have to provide sensitive personal information such as name, address, and financial information. There is a risk that this data could be misused or hacked by irresponsible parties. Data security is a serious issue that can hurt players financially and personally. If personal data falls into the wrong hands, one can become a victim of identity theft or financial fraud.

10. Potential Abuse by Children

Online gambling can be easily accessed by children and teenagers, especially if there are no effective measures in place to limit their access. Dependence on online gambling can start at a very young age, which has a long-term impact on children's development. The protection of children from unrestricted access to online gambling sites is a serious challenge that society must face.

11. Greater Social and Economic Impact

The negative impacts of online gambling are not only felt by the individuals and families involved, but also by society as a whole. Mental health costs, financial problems, and misuse of public funds can be detrimental to a country's economy and cause a greater burden on the healthcare system and public safety.

In a predetermined amount of words, we have discussed how online gambling can ruin people's lives. The impacts include addiction, financial problems, family breakdown, negative influence on the younger generation, lack of adequate regulation, and personal data security hazards. To protect society from the damaging effects of online gambling, it is important to have strict regulations, better education about the risks, and support for affected individuals so they can get the help they need. In addition, society should also be more aware of the negative impacts of online gambling and consider the long-term implications on individuals and society as a whole.
