As we know, in an increasingly advanced era there have been many changes starting from the economic, political and socio-cultural fields. The progress of the times taking us to the better step, but it can also lead to intense competition.
Intense competition? Yes, with the global market, many people are looking for new opportunities, from job opportunities to seeking education. Then how can we compete in the global environment? Not only skills seen, but also fluency in language. With language we can communicate with each other and create good relationships, so the delivery of messages can be received properly. Therefore, it is necessary to learn foreign languages to partner on a global scale.
Then it can help develop a business from a national scale to an international one, foreign languages in business are very important because they can help us read trade strategies and communicate with consumers to avoid misunderstandings. And the most important point, using foreign languages can increase one's value so that it becomes more respected.
However, there are still many people who aren’t fluent in language, so they take some special training. In the learning process there are obstacles ranging from mild to severe. The obstacle was seen from the difficulty in remembering a vocabulary, but at every new meeting a new vocabulary was still given. This causes previously studied chapters to be forgotten by overwriting new chapters.
Therefore, in every foreign language learning meeting, it is necessary to evaluate learning so that the previous material can be remembered. In addition, there are obstacles arising from the lack of self-confidence seen when communicating, foreign languages are rarely used, such as in English or Mandarin, they tend to use Indonesian which is considered safe, even though interacting using foreign languages can improve language skills. From the environment in which they live, sometimes people with foreign languages are considered too excessive, instead speaking foreign languages from their own environment creates comfort so when speaking in the outside environment they become more fluent.
Learning a foreign language isn’t always of pronunciation, but also about how to write and read so you have a balance between speaking, writing and listening. Learning a foreign language properly must be based on strong intentions, so when learning has own enthusiasm. In my neighborhood there’s any workshop for Chinese and English courses, but from what I see, the area is crowded only when the exam day approaches. This becomes a point of problem in learning languages because they study only to take exams, not to increase their abilities so after they finish the exams, they will forget about it.
Therefore, we need to change our mindset such as “Foreign language that was previously possible for just a lifestyle. Now foreign languages have become a necessity ”.
For that any solutions we can apply in learning foreign languages, such as:
• Have a strong intention in learning a foreign language.
• Write down vocabulary that we think it’s difficult, then we translate and understand it.
• Watch films in foreign languages, to measure our skills.
• Listening to foreign language songs.
• Get used to speaking in a foreign language.
