Reading can reveal information that we did not know before. Therefore, reading is taught to children from an early age with the aim of becoming critical readers (Tarigan, 2015: 7). By reading we can more easily understand what we read. Well, critical reading skills are very important to develop because in a lot of media or websites that we meet through cell phones there are some hoaxes so with critical reading we can determine which ones are real and which are hoaxes. Now in this essay we will discuss the importance of critical reading skills in our lives.
Critical reading helps us improve our learning power, because we have to try to understand and answer difficult questions and evaluate complex arguments. So the point is that critical reading can improve our learning because when we understand a lesson of course we are looking for answers so reading can make it easier for us to find the answer. Then we can also evaluate or assess the answers we find from reading that are right or not. So that we learn more by reading and finding out whether the answer to the question is correct or not.
Critical reading encourages us to think critically about the information we encounter. Now this is one of the importance of critical reading in our lives because with critical reading we can think critically about the information we encounter and can help us evaluate existing information and produce better thinking. So we can also analyze or assess whether an information is true or not so as to produce good thoughts and not make mistakes in making decisions. So we must be able to think critically about what we read.
Critical reading helps us raise awareness about important issues that affect our daily lives, such as health, issues about education, the latest news on climate change, punishment and challenges faced by society. Now the point of the statement is that by reading critically we can increase our awareness about health, for example that initially we often ignore breakfast, after we find out that it is not good by reading, so we realize that so far what we have been doing is not good and can make us sick. So the importance of critical reading for our lives is that we must read to make us aware of the things we do that are good or not with our lives.
From the above statement, we can conclude that by reading critically, we can develop our ability to understand, evaluate, and think critically about the information we encounter. There are several important things in critical reading skills which not only lie in improving learning power, but with critical reading it can facilitate better thinking and increase our awareness of important issues in everyday life. By reading critically, we can also distinguish which information is valid and which is not, and by reading we can also be more careful in making better decisions, thus making us more aware of the impact of our actions that we do everyday. Therefore, critical reading is not just a skill, but a necessity to face the world in this era.
