Introduction to Industry 4.0

Jusan Qithri, Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of Cinovasi, explained that Industry 4.0 is a disruption to Industry 3.0 and is an era of Smartization, that ushers in smart manufacturing.

Before speaking further about Industry 4.0, Jusan explained about the history of the industry.

In the beginning, goods were manufactured manually by human or with the help of working animals. 

In the 1800s, water- and-steam-powered machines were developed to increase the production capacity and this was the era of Industry 1.0.

The development to Industry 2.0 occured at the beginning of 20th century, as electricity was used as the main power source for the production process.

Meanwhile Industry 3.0 started in the last few decades of 20th century, when there were various invention for electronic devices, such as transistors, and others to more fully automate machines.

The period of Industry 3.0 was also indicated by the development of electronic based automation system and computer (digitalization era).

On April 4th, 2018, Indonesia has launched "Making Indonesia 4.0", which is a strategic initiative from Indonesian government to encourage the implementation of Industry 4.0 in Indonesia.

"In the last 3 years, we have done research and development about Industry 4.0 with several universities, such as Bandung Institute of Technology and Prasetiya Mulia University. When Indonesian government launched the 'Making Indonesia 4.0', we were very enthusiastic to welcome the initiative," said Jusan.

 "We are now ready to adapt the Industry 4.0, but there are also several solutions using that theme although they are still oriented to 3.0," said Fajar Wantah, Chief Business & Solution Development Officer Cinovasi.

"One of the main features in Industry 4.0 is the digital twin between cyber or digital domain and physical domain, this is usually called as cyber-physical system which is nearly real-time. In order to build a cyber physical system, vertical integration, horizontal integration, and integration of the cycle from planning and design to product consumption are required. The condition for these integrations is that all elements of the system should be smart things," Fajar continued.

The changes from Industry 1.0, to 2.0, until 4.0, is called as Industrial Revolution. The latest is called as Industrial Revolution 4.0 or IR4.0. Even so, the revolution is not only to replace the old things with the new things.

The implementation of IR4.0 is not only about purchasing a new high tech equipment, but also requiring fundamental changes in the people and process, besides the technology itself. Technology plays the role as the disruptor and forces the changes. But the main orientation of IR4.0 is the human, both in the production side e.g. manufacturer, and consumer side.

Ronaldi concluded by saying that Smart Manufacturing driven by IR4.0 changes mass production to consumer-centric and mass customization and in this case the technology disruption and human-centric orientation will result in the changes of the production process.
