In 1929, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) first held a prestigious film award known as the Academy Awards, or better known as the Oscars.

Since then, the Oscars have become one of the biggest and most prestigious film awards in the world, which is the main goal for filmmakers and actors to win.

However, along with the changing times and cultural changes, the Oscars are also not free from controversy.

In this article, I will explain the history of the Academy Awards, the impact the Oscars had, and the controversies surrounding the awards.

History

The history of the Academy Awards begins in 1927, when 36 members of the Hollywood film industry joined together to form an organization called the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS).

The main purpose of AMPAS is to reward the best works in the film industry, as well as to improve the quality and standards of film production.

In 1929, AMPAS held its first film award, which was named the Academy Awards, or better known as the Oscars.
The first Oscars were awarded in 15 film categories, including Best Actor, Best Actress and Best Picture.

In the same year, the Oscar was also given to the first non-English language film, namely "The Patriot" produced by the German film studio, UFA.

Since then, the Oscars have become the largest and most prestigious film award in the world, which is considered a token of appreciation for the best works in the film industry.

However, along with the development of the times, the Oscars also underwent several changes. In 1934, the first Oscar was given to an animated film, namely the film "The Three Little Pigs" produced by Walt Disney.

In 1939, the first Oscar was given to a Spanish-language film, namely "The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse" produced by the Argentine film studio, Cinecolor.

In addition, the number of categories awarded by the Oscars continues to grow in line with developments in technology and film genres.

Currently, Oscars are awarded to more than 24 film categories, including animated films, documentaries and foreign language films.

Impacts

The Academy Awards, or better known as the Oscars, have become the largest and most prestigious film awards in the world since they were first held in 1929.

Oscar is considered as a sign of appreciation for the best works in the film industry, and is the main goal for filmmakers and actors to achieve it.

The impact caused by the Oscars is huge for the winners, especially from a career and financial standpoint.

Winning in certain categories at the Oscars can give a huge boost to one's career, especially for actors and directors.

In addition, winning in the Best picture category can also have a big impact on a film's box office revenue, because this award is considered a sign that the film is the best film ever.

The Oscars also have a far-reaching impact on the film industry as a whole.

This award is often used as a reference by producers and audiences to determine films that are worth watching and investing in.

In addition, the Oscars are also used as a reference by filmmakers in determining the title of the film to be produced, because winning in the Best picture category is considered a sign that the film is a film that will be in demand in the market.

However, not all films that won awards at the Oscars were successful in the market.

Several films that won awards at the Oscars failed to meet audience expectations and ended as failures at the box office.

However, even so, the Oscar is still considered the largest and most prestigious film award in the world, which is considered a sign of appreciation for the best works in the film industry.

Even though it is considered the biggest and most prestigious film award in the world, the Academy Awards, or better known as the Oscars, are not without controversy.

Some of the controversies that have occurred around the Oscars include:

  • Representation:

Representation is one of the controversies that often occur around the Oscars, especially in terms of representing filmmakers and actors from various backgrounds.

Many people feel that the Oscars do not fairly represent minority filmmakers and actors, especially in categories such as Best director and Best actor/actress.

One of the reasons why representation at the Oscars is often seen as unfair is because it is often filmmakers and actors from the same background who are selected as winners in the category.

This can lead to complaints from filmmakers and minority actors who feel unacknowledged and unappreciated by the Oscars.

Apart from that, there is also suspicion that the representation of filmmakers and actors from minority groups at the Oscars is influenced by factors other than the quality of the films being contested.

This can raise suspicions that Oscar winners are not only selected based on the quality of the films being contested, but are also influenced by other factors, such as lobbying or the influence of certain film producers.

  • Nominees:

Nominees are one of the most frequent controversies around the Oscars, where several films that did not deserve nominations at the Oscars were selected as nominations, while films that were more deserving were not.

This is often seen as the result of lobbying or the influence of certain film producers trying to promote their films at the Oscars.

One of the reasons why there are films that do not deserve nominations at the Oscars is because the process of selecting films that will become nominations is not completely transparent.

This can raise suspicions that the selection of nominated films at the Oscars is influenced by factors other than the quality of the films being contested, such as lobbying or the influence of certain film producers.

  • Selection of judges:

Jury selection is one of the most frequent controversies around the Oscars, where some feel that the process for selecting the jury that will determine the winner of the Oscars is not transparent.

This can raise suspicions that Oscar winners are influenced by factors other than the quality of the films being contested.

To determine the Oscar winner, the organizers use a group of judges consisting of filmmakers, actors and other professionals who are experienced in the field of film.

However, the process of selecting the jury that will determine the Oscar winner is often not completely transparent, giving rise to suspicions that Oscar winners are influenced by factors other than the quality of the films being contested.

  • Implementation:

The implementation is one of the controversies that often occur around the Oscars, where some people feel that the Oscars are not very attractive, so they are unable to attract the attention of the audience.

Some people also feel that the Oscars are too long and boring, so they are not able to keep the audience's interest.

To organize the Oscars, organizers usually use an award ceremony held at a famous theater in Hollywood.

However, some people felt that the awards ceremony was not very interesting, and thus unable to attract the attention of the audience.

In addition, some people also feel that holding the Oscars is too long and boring, so they are unable to maintain audience interest.

Conclussion:

The Academy Awards or Oscars are the largest and most prestigious film awards in the world which were first held in 1929 by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS).

Oscar is considered as a sign of appreciation for the best works in the film industry, and is the main goal for filmmakers and actors to achieve it.

However, along with the development of the era, the Oscars are also not free from controversy, especially regarding the lack of diversity in nominations and winners, as well as dependence on big film studios.

Nonetheless, the Oscar is still the largest and most prestigious film award in the world, which is considered a token of appreciation for the best works in the film industry.

In the future, it is hoped that the Oscars will be able to overcome the controversies around it, especially regarding issues of diversity and dependence on big film studios, so that this award can be more fair and represent all members of the film industry.
