I was shocked, as far as I know my friend is not too fond of sports. He’s a true fan of K-Pop. She’s only a fan of some music concerts. Then why all of a sudden did she take me to a sports event? After I get a ticket from her, I finally figured out why. LEE YONG DAE! Yes, my friend really wanted to see Lee Youngdae, a badminton player who is very famous for his great skills and good-looks! The stadium was naturally filled with girl-fans. Nearly half of them were carrying posters of Lee, expressing their love and support. I remember how excited when k-pop stars held a concert in Indonesia. And this sports stadium was being exactly the same except for the part that there’s neither singing nor dancing. And I realized that this is a new phenomenon finally, the k-sport star! Lee Yongdae was born on 11 September 1988. He first won at Asian Games as the men’s team and bronze as the men’s doubles at the 2006 Doha Asian Games. Then he won gold in mixed double at the 2008 Beijing Olympics through which he gained such a fame. At the 2012 London Olympics, he won a bronze medal as the men’s doubles. Badminton is the second most popular sport in Indonesia after football. I once did a small survey with teens and young adults of their favorite badminton athletes. Taufik Hidayat and Simon Santoso of Indonesia were listed of course but also, the name of a Korean athlete came out as well. Almost all of them mentioned the name, Lee Youngdae as their favorite athletes. I guess it’s because Lee had participated many of world championships and marked the great results. My younger cousin admires Park as his ideal athlete and he often goes out with his friends for exercising because he wants to be like Park. Star athletes do give a great impact on growing children!
