University of Ahmad Dahlan Yogyakarta Succeed Held Opening Ceremony "Youth Communication Day"

Yogyakarta – UAD successfully held an opening ceremony with the title "Communication Challenges in the Ages of Hybrid" on Monday (12/13/21) by presenting speakers from several countries, which is China, Thailand, India, and Indonesia. This webinar was opened by Mr. Muhammad Najih Farianto S.I.Kom, M.A as the Head of Communication Studies Study Program, Ahmad Dahlan University, Yogyakarta. Webinars are held for 5 days. Guided by Mr. Mufid Salim, S.I.Kom, M.B.A. as moderator at the event on the opening ceremony.

This transcript from one of speakers in the opening ceremony of Youth Communication Day which is Prof. Estrella Arroyo, Ed.D. (College of Liberal Arts University of Saint Anthony, Filipina). Prof. Estrella Arroyo is the second keynote of speakers that be part of the Opening Ceremony of Youth Communication Day. She explained the material about the Hybrid Communication where people related to different types of workers.

“The young students, professionals, and members of the academic in celebration of Youth Communication Day sponsored by The Faculty of Literature, Culture and Communication and having been invited me as of one of the speakers for this online event truly speaks about the kind of communication. We also exercise right now from the University of Saint Anthony Philippines; I am connecting with you again but to remotely while some of you are in your home base at the studios of the Universitas Ahmad Dahlan.” She introduces herself happily as the speaker that time.

She added, “Our seem challenges in community find me the time of hybrid is that only relevant and timely by the fact that we have to come to a point. Let me put my topic, let me sort of at the best ways to communicate it was face-to-face but because of the pandemic, we reengineer and repackaged our communication by doing the remote way. Work from home, work from a distance for safety and convenience. “

Prof. Estrella Arroyo even added a data from based on research U.S. employees, “Backed up by for example one conducted by the society for human resource management found that 52% of 1.000 U.S. employee would be okay with staying 100% remote was 35% would agree to pay card if they could still work from home. The question now is, what is the impact of this hybrid moments on communication at work? What are the advantages and challenges?”.

5 hybrid models explained by Prof. Estrella Arroyo are,

  • Static hybrid
  • Dynamic hybrid
  • Synchronized hybrid
  • Default digital
  • Fully distributed

She explained about these two modes, “The choice of hybrid work model or not which is most beneficial to the nature of world should be the primary consideration synchronous and asynchronous. For example, in school they practice synchronous and asynchronous communication happened in real time and it can check responses majority of communications in a typical in office setting which is synchronous. And examples of a face-to-face conversation are phone call, video conferencing, and instant messaging. Synchronous communication can help promote and hybrid team whose rarely meet in person to build trust and intimacy been regularly done this mode of communication from community to help in creating a sense of belonging that make employees feel that they are connected to other employees. In synchronous, email, fax, chat apps and platforms collaboration to share document and video messaging are examples of a synchronous communication.”

In this time, she wanted to explain about the advantages of hybrid communication, one is “The first, increase productivity remote work but allows an employer to gain more focus and less stress. Travel time, timing dressing up, and getting up early almost not concern anymore. And the second is, allowing employees flexible work arrangements is one of the most wonderful morale-boosting on employer may extend. Because of the availability of various community send apps and employee can stay in touch with a concerned people when work is done at home. Trust employees can lack of trust and the communication can be a serious problem especially its scattered teens. Building meaningful relationships becomes more possible especially when community collaboration conversations are done daily. Having someone in your company could trust you makes you feel understood or cared for and it builds a stronger support system.”

Later, she explained about the fourth and fifth advantages of hybrid communication, “Number four is improved collaboration. Internal communication affects the efficiency of team players while working on a project. Even members haven't met each other they become more comfort collaborate. Scattered teams assume responsibility to make the work done because hybrid community insurers timely collaboration. Next is, employee commitment. Employees feel more comfortable working with each other especially when there is no pressure from other employees and there is trust and collaboration.”

Summary from five elements of well-being, first is liking what you do which day and being motivated. To a social element, having supportive relationship and love in your life. Third is financial elements, managing your economic life to reduce stress and increase security. Communication element, liking and where you live feeling safe and having pride in your in community. For physical, having your health and enough energy to get things done daily.

She talked about the barrier to effective hybrid communication, “if we have advantages are also disadvantages of the challenges. For the barriers to effective communication mentioned the first is the loss of physical. Unconscious employed bias. The dilution of company culture. Siloed workplace. Lack of transparency and employees well being, so we have to strategize in applying hybrid communication. And later, strategies in hybrid communication is in all company employers must strategize and workable a show, where the employer must assess and evaluate the existing system. And adjust the nature of word business and communication tools that are needed for employees expect to do.”

Conclusion, she added, “What do we expect in the future; hybrid workplaces, hybrid employees, hybrid communication, I can see three expectation hybrid workplaces, traditional employees in office. And conventional face-to-face are long gone. According to Anjoy Bojic, who shared her article on Social Media, there is no certainty for the future holds but we three conclusion can hybrid work models employees may have the chance to get the best of both worlds.”
