With the ever-increasing growth of smartphone and internet users, inevitably, the development of applications in them will also increase.

We know that YouTube is currently a complete and up-to-date source of entertainment, inspiration, motivation, business, and education. All users can get from YouTube freely and without limits.

YouTube in general

Youtube is one of the biggest platforms that can reach most audiences in the world. YouTube is a website that allows users to save, watch and publicly share videos.

YouTube is the best place/means for sharing videos from around the world, ranging from short videos, tutorials, vlogs, short films, movie trailers, music, education, animation, entertainment, news, TV, and various other interesting information.

The increasing growth of smartphone and internet users has made YouTube videos more varied.

Most YouTube content is uploaded by individuals, namely content creators/Youtubers. In its development, content creators don't just work alone, they start to form a team to start the process of editing and rearranging the next content idea.

Media and TV companies such as CNN, CNBC, TRANS TV, and KOMPAS, as well as organizations and institutions also share videos through the YouTube Channel.

Unregistered users can only watch videos. Meanwhile, registered users can upload unlimited videos, subscribe to favorite channels, and get user-related/most-watched content.

Users who choose the premium viewing package are exempt from can download videos offline by downloading them via smartphone and can run in the background.

In addition, YouTube also provides provisions for content that is offensive. Users under the age of 18 do not have permission to watch these offensive videos.

This is to keep teens and children from watching the videos. The YouTube Kids app is also available for children under the age of 13.

Youtube history

YouTube was first implemented administratively to coincide with Valentine's Day, namely on February 14, 2005. Whether or not this was done by the three founders who were former Paypal employees.

Steve Chen, Chad Hurley, and Jawed Karim are the founders of Youtube. At that time, they registered a shop in San Mateo, California as the official Youtube address. Their initial mission was to make YouTube a video-based online dating platform.

Initially, YouTube was only visited by a handful of people but people weren't even interested in YouTube. The three founders ended up placing an ad on the Craiglist platform and would give $20 to anyone who wanted to upload a video on YouTube.

In the past, the videos on this platform were still related to online dating, but they weren't well known either. Until finally Youtube made a new policy in which the content opened the most expansive possible door for anyone who wanted to post any video.

The first video uploaded on this platform is titled Me at the Zoo which was uploaded by their co-founder who was visiting Diego Zoo, namely Jaweed Karim, which lasts 19 seconds.

The video was posted on April 23, 2005, by the channel of Jawed and has been viewed 222 million times.

How did youtube become the biggest video platform?

In May 2005 the beta version was published. At that time, Youtube was founded as a company funded by wealthy individuals. Six months later, the company received an investment of US$3.5 million from Sequoia Capital.

This month, Youtube was officially announced. Since changing its strategy, Youtube has experienced very significant events. In January 2006, video viewers on YouTube jumped to 25 million.

While in July 2006, this site has 65,000 videos uploaded every day and was visited 100 million times in one day.

This positive growth prompted Sequoia and Artist Capital as a capital venture to disburse additional funds of $ 8 million for YouTube in April 2006.

Youtube operations are getting better, the results are getting bigger. Youtube is getting unstoppable. After rapid growth, Google acquired YouTube less than a year later for an estimated $1.65 billion.

However, the site is still relatively small compared to now and has not even reached the UK and several other countries. In June 2007, the site was finally launched in the UK as well as in eight other countries.

After much development, HD-quality videos were introduced in December 2008. And now, more people are discovering the various uses that YouTube has.

In May 2013, YouTube launched a premium program on a YouTube Channel. The launch of the program allows users to watch premium and ad-free videos.

In February 2015, YouTube introduced a secondary app for kids known as YouTube Kids. The application is specifically for children under the age of 13 years.

In addition, parents can also set the content they want to display to their children, according to the child's age.

Youtube as the mass media communication

Youtube is a video site that provides various information in the form of moving images and can be relied upon. This site is indeed provided for those who want to search for video information and watch it live.

We can also participate in uploading (uploading) videos to the Youtube server and sharing them throughout the world. With an efficient and ubiquitous FLV (Flash Video) file format as a standard for encoding films uploaded by users, YouTube is easily accessible by the public instantly on the internet.

In addition, technology-enabled YouTube inspires people to watch videos via the web with Web 2.0 social networking features such as comments, groups, member homepages, subscriptions, and other community-based ideas popularized through websites such as MySpace, Facebook, and others. etc.

With the existence of the Youtube site, actors who are considered to play a role in global communications such as broadcasting companies, be it in newspapers, radio, or television, seem to have less of a role.

Everyone can broadcast the news on Youtube. In fact, there is some news that is only broadcast via Youtube because people are free to upload their own videos.

Because Youtube's main goal is to be a place for everyone (no matter their skill level) to upload and share their experiences with others.

Judging from the number of YouTube viewers and users, it's only natural that Youtube is a part of internet culture.

Everyone's freedom to enjoy the entertainment provided by Youtube can present information from a more varied and interactive perspective.

Youtube, which is connected to an internet connection, allows users to find whatever videos they like, and interact with other users directly through the available comments column.

This mass communication is more interactive and more entertaining than conventional mass media. The feedback that occurs in the YouTube mass media is indeed not direct in contact but allows physical communicants to interact directly with the communicator (video uploader) and even with other communicants online through the comments column.

It can be seen that the presence of Youtube as a new mass media makes its own value in disseminating information to a wide audience.

In general, the communicator mass media is a combination of several individuals who form an institution, on Youtube all individual Youtube users can become communicators without first creating an institution.

They don't have to bother sending a video to a television station so that many people can watch it. Simply by uploading them on Youtube and spreading the link on various social media, their videos can be watched by many people.

The Impact

In today's society, the place of various social media is becoming more and more important for everyone.  Companies use it a lot to improve their relationships with their customers, but young people today also use it to create a place of their own in the media.

This is also the case for the YouTube platform. You could call YouTube the new television of our generation.  Indeed, more and more people are going there to watch new music videos of their favorite songs, "prank" videos for entertainment, beauty videos for tips on their appearance, and even shows that they missed on TV.

YouTube, therefore, allows them to watch what they want when they want and no matter where they are.  Apart from offering them a lot of entertainment, YouTube also offers them a variety of information.

Youtube is not always positive. You would think that everything is fine with this platform and that it only brings a good evolution to the company, but this is not quite the case.

In fact, the abundance of information that is offered non-stop is causing people to become lazier.  As Radio-Canada reporter Catherine Mathys puts it, "consumers don't go so much to content anymore, they tend to let it come to them, especially through social media."  it is obvious that having so much information at your fingertips results in a great saving of time, but it is not necessarily beneficial for intelligence.

For example, a young adult searching for a school assignment believes that all sources found on Google are good for her work.  What she often forgets is that many websites are made by young teenage girls and the information is wrong.

The impact on teenagers. The entertainment industry changes very quickly with each new generation.  Nowadays, the biggest platform where teenagers entertain themselves is Youtube.

You can watch anything: video tutorials, lectures on a thousand different topics, YouTubers talking about video games, whatever you want!  With these endless possibilities, teens have the freedom to access whatever content they want.

Teenagers, as a general rule, are highly influential and can get carried away by the most popular trends.  Normally they are influenced by the so-called "influencers" since they are greatly affected by the public behavior of their idols.

Teenagers start by watching a video on YouTube and end up watching two hours of banal content on many occasions or with videos that have nothing to do with the main topic with which they started watching the channel.

YouTube has an addictive nature to captivate the viewer, something that happens very frequently among adolescents. When teenagers follow "influencers" on YouTube with questionable behavior or thinking, this can affect the minds of young people.

Inappropriate behaviors that are praised by millions of followers can be dangerous.  Adolescents may mirror this behavior and expect similar approval from their peers.

Advantages and disadvantages of Youtube

  • Advantages

YouTube is a website open to all types of people, whether individuals or professionals. They have the freedom to share videos they have produced themselves at any time.

The other advantage is that it allows a trader or a company to publicize its products through advertising videos. The site, therefore, contributes to the development of e-commerce, also called digital marketing.

This opportunity offers entrepreneurs free communication of their know-how. The objective is of course to find customers in order to make income. In addition, YouTube also offers educational videos called "tutor" which present DIY tips for beginners.

  • Disadvantages

Although having increased in popularity, this website also has disadvantages for its subscribers. It is more particularly the YouTube channels that create a certain competition between these users.

This means that if you want to create a YouTube channel on a given subject, you risk having potential competitors. The reason is that they may be on the same topic as you, which can get you into a race to get more followers.

To do this, your video content will need to be original with a personal touch. Since YouTube makes quality videos available to its users, their production can be expensive.

It will therefore be necessary to invest in order to create good content by purchasing the appropriate equipment. This may include getting a camera or an Apple phone to get better images.

Conclusion

It is undeniable that Youtube is the largest video platform in the world. The 3 founders of Youtube tried different ways to introduce their platform to people.

Until finally YouTube exploded after 2006 and was finally bought by Google. Until now, YouTube has become a mainstay for people to view any content.

If you look at it now, Youtube has indeed started to replace TV, because, with Youtube, people only need to open it via their laptops or even smartphones.

The amount of content that is presented on Youtube makes us open to globalization because we can see any content from any country. From there, international communications did not escape attention.

Examples such as Mr. content. Animals that are viral and well known to many people or educational content like The Slowmo Guys which explores things that we may not know about technology and physics.

Apart from that, there are also many advantages and disadvantages of Youtube, such as Youtube for free, but if you don't want advertisements on the video, you have to buy Youtube Premium.

Even though there are YouTube Kids now, it is possible for children to see offensive content on the fake accounts they create. But even so, it is possible that Youtube will still be successful in the future.

Therefore, we need to process good and bad content so that we are not influenced by the content creators present. Make sure you are wise in choosing the content to watch and make YouTube a positive tool for learning and even improving your communication skills.
