LANGUAGE PLANNING IN IMPROVING ELEMENTARY SCHOOL STUDENTS LITERACY COMPETENCE

By: Muhammad Fajir Simon; Supervised By: Muziatun, S.Pd, M.App. Ling, Ph.D

The elementary school level is the level where the average child gets their first formal education, in other words, elementary school is a place where they get knowledge or understanding of something they don't get at home except the ability to communicate which is basically taught at home by their parents. time. This is also related to students' language skills which cannot be separated from the teachings of their parents before they enter formal education. For example, students who have been taught to call their father and mother at home, then the school's task is to shape their ethics and character. Even though it has been taught by parents at home, students also need to be taught ethics by teachers in elementary school. because not all knowledge about language obtained at home is in accordance with good morals or ethics for students. This is in accordance with the example above. Therefore, in this context, teachers need to implement language planning to be able to carry out important tasks such as teaching good language to form good character and ethics for students.

Language and Ethics

At SDN 5 SUWAWA we interviewed one of the teachers who is interested in the field of languages, the teacher's name is ibu. Katrin. In the interview, ibu katrin stated that the main education was at home where he learned to call his father and mother, whereas at school the teacher only needed to shape the students' character or ethics. Ibu Katrin also said that at home students are free to do or say anything, but when they are at school, the words or sentences spoken by students are always monitored by the teacher, in order to shape the students' character, the teacher also gives examples according to their experience, such as when the teacher is walking. and hearing students say sentences or words that are inappropriate, then the teacher reprimands and corrects the student's words.

Student understanding is an indicator for teacher learning, such as when the teacher provides learning to students, the teacher uses language that is used every day so that it is easier for students to understand, but if students still don't understand, the teacher will interpret it using standard language.

Impact on Student Ethics

Teachers play a role in monitoring and correcting the language used by students. When students use inappropriate or impolite language, the teacher provides guidance and correction. As in this case study where the teacher always monitors students in any situation. This helps students understand the importance of using language well and correctly in various situations. With good language planning, teachers can teach language that is polite and in accordance with ethical norms to students. It helps students to develop good character and polite behavior. This is in accordance with the case study at SDN 5 SUWAWA where students' words are always monitored by the teacher in any situation.

Student Learning

In the case study at SDN 5 SUWAWA, the teacher uses everyday language to make it easier for students to understand. If students still don't understand, the teacher will explain using standard language. This helps students understand lessons better and improves their ability to comprehend instructions and learning materials. Although students have learned to communicate at home, language planning in elementary school ensures that students learn to use language correctly and according to social and academic contexts. This includes the use of proper grammar, correct vocabulary, and appropriate intonation. as an example from this case study where speech taught by parents at home will be re-developed at school according to the context.
