Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is an American superhero film based on the Marvel Comics character Shang-Chi. Produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, it is intended to be the twenty-eighth film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). 

The film is directed by Destin Daniel Cretton from a screenplay by David Callaham and stars Simu Liu, Awkwafina, Tony Leung, Michelle Yeoh, Fala Chen, Meng'er Zhang, Florian Munteanu and Ronny Chieng.

The legend of the 10 rings has a difference in each generation, a ring that has the power of gods and eternal life. in this film the ring is used as a power. who has this ring is a man from Macau and has an army called the Ten Rings. he wants power and money and is never satisfied with what he gets, so that one day he wants power in the Talo area that has magical powers, he wants to visit the village. 

It is not easy to enter the Talo area because you have to pass through a moving forest that opens every year. then he met a woman guarding the Talo area, and the two people fought. But Shang Chin's father turned out to be defeated by that woman and was able to master the 10 rings and they finally became husband and wife after his wife defeated Shang Chin's father.

They were blessed with two children, a boy and a girl. Shang Chi was the first son, and Xi Xialing was the second daughter. After his mother died, Shang Chin was taught how to fight and how to kill people by his father. While his younger sister is not allowed to fight so he hides in the room to train alone by watching his older brother being trained. then at the age of 14 years his father gave the task to Shang Chi to avenge who killed his mother.

But Shang Chi didn't come back home, he stayed in the US and worked in a hotel there as a valet. With his co-worker Katy. Suddenly there was an attack on the bus to take the pendant that Shan Chin was wearing. And all of that turned out to be his father's plan to bring his two children home. Because they both have the dragon pendant their mother gave them.

His father had the desire to return to the Talo to open the gate that his wife always spoke to him that we would meet, as if that his wife had not died but was locked up somewhere in the Talo. Because of the influence of the power of the ten rings, his father Shang Chin will still go to the Talo village to save his mother Shang Chin. Shang Chin had prevented him that it was just his father's imagination but his father still believed that his wife was still alive.

Because of Wenwu's conflict with Shang Chi then wenwu locked his son and Katy underground, but underground met a person and Morriss the animal who used to be growing up together with his mother's friend, then they headed to Talo with guidance from Morris and met his mother's family, then they told anything all about what happening to his father.

Wenwu Shang Chin's father finally came to Talo and tried to open the cage where he thought it was his wife's place even though it was the evil enemies who were captured there. There was a battle which was then assisted by the Dragon.

Thesis Statement & Main Paragraph

After watching the film Shan Chi and the legend of the Ten Rings, there are several statements that have become literary criticisms. Among other things, when girls are not allowed to participate in martial arts training, there is clearly a difference in feminism, the tradition is still strong that women are only behind the scenes or taking care of the household, taking care of the family, not being allowed to leave the house while the men are responsible. answer all the needs of the household, which can go out of the house to fight or work.

There is another in the battle scene between wenwu and his mother Shang Chi. seen there that his father Shang Chi who has the power of 10 rings can win the battle for fighting a woman. It was clear that the war was won by a woman, namely Shang Chi's mother, who could take over the ring. Based on this scene, feminism is clearly visible there.

There is a scene where at the time of having dinner together at the same table, Wenwu asked Katy's Chinese name, even though Wenwu previously called Katy an American girl. As if Wenwu could not accept Katy's status, who had lived in America for a long time, which had absorbed the culture and behavior of an American girl. 

When Shang Chi's father asked about this, Shang Chi and his sister looked at each other because at dinner it was inappropriate for his father to ask things that they thought were taboo.  then Wenwu explained to them that his real name also had a sacred meaning according to their tradition. And it was also explained that he was Shang Chi's father who also had several previous names.

Conclussion

So in my opinion, in the film Shang Chi and the legend of ten rings, it can be concluded that in the film there are two different cultures, each with different traditions, namely life in San Francisco in the United States and Chinese traditions that are still being brought to America. Like when Katy's grandmother gave empty chairs and food at mealtime to her husband or Katy's deceased grandfather.

 In America where they work as parking attendants or valets at a hotel in San Francisco, and Katy is a woman but she is good at driving and she even dares to race. Provide a statement that in America women are recognized and given the same rights and status as men. But on the other hand, her mother wants her child to immediately find a decent new job as a woman. Katy's mother still carries Chinese traditions even though they have lived in San Francisco for a long time.

Meanwhile, during the scene where Shang Chi and his sister return to Macau, with their father, after being welcomed into their home, Wenwu's father or Shang Chi said that "take the girls to their room", referring that girls are not need to get involved in boys' affairs.

In this film, there are requirements for gender differences and very strong traditions which we can find a lot of in the scenes and actors.
