Pembicara: Amiruddin Noor (mantan Duta Besar Indonesia untuk Norwegia dan Islandia)
Public speaking is an important element of diplomacy and it can't be separated from diplomacy.
To be understood as a public speaker:
1. please do fix your appearance; formal outfits are recommended.
2. Watch your gesture and mostly watch your tone and articulation. Tone and articulation is two of the most fundamental aspects of public speaking.
3. More importantly, your voice should reach the back of the room.
4. Use the right gestures at the right moment, don't over-do the gestures.
You need to draft your speech before your presentation.
Make 2 drafts: one for yourself which contains only a few points of your speech. Don't put too much elements on your 1st draft. Your 2nd draft should contain the full summary of your speech so you can evaluate it and probably could use it for your future presentations.
The thing about public speaking is being persuasive. You persuasive others to do things by your speech.
Public Speaking in Diplomacy
When you have any ideas/opinions, don't be so sure about it; don't think that your ideas are absolutely right. Try to compromise with other delegates' ideas. If you don't agree in their ideas, say it in the most diplomatic way. Try to avoid attacking other people's opinions because every opinion should be respected.
How to Manage Your Audience
Break the ice. You could do it by telling jokes (preferably intelligent jokes) or you could probably tell your interesting experiences.
The audience come with expectations that they'd get something from you, so try to fulfill their expectations and give them your best efforts. Persuade them to do good things you've told them during your session.
Your goal is to have your audience moved by your speech. You could make them happy, sad, or anything - it all depends on how you move them. You should also influence your audience because influencing other people to do your advise is another important goal of public speaking.
Pause after a long speech. Give time to the audience to understand and absorb what you just talked about.
How To Be A Good Public Speaker
1. Focus
2. Take public speaking seriously. By mastering public speaking, we're a step colser to understand how to communicate with other people. Gain as much knowledge as possible. Don't talk about sensitive issues (especially the taboo ones).
