Abdul Wahhab bin Rustum (d. 211 AH)

Beliefs: Khawarij

Declared Muslims who commit sins as disbelievers

Rebelled against Muslim governments

Although his name was Abdul Wahhab, his followers were called "Wahhabi."

Muhammad bin Abdul Wahhab (d. 1260 AH)

Beliefs: Ahlus-Sunnah Wal-Jama'ah

All sins are forgiven by Allah before the soul reaches the throat

Submitted to and obeyed Muslim governments

His father's name was Abdul Wahhab, so his followers should have been called

"Muhammadi."

This movement awakened the Muslims who had been preoccupied with worldly affairs. With the help of his companions, such as Ibn Saud and Abdul Aziz Ibn Saud, Sheikh Muhammad bin Abdul Wahhab became the driving force behind the establishment of a sovereign Saudi Arabia. The ideas of this movement were carried by three pilgrims returning from Mecca to the land of Minangkabau.

Apart from concentrating on making changes in people's religious lives, Sheikh Muhammad bin Abdul Wahhab is also an accomplished thinker and writer. This is proven by his phenomenal writings and books of Islamic teachings. The works of the sheikh include: Ahaditsu fil Fitani wal Hawadits, Ahkamush Sholah, Adabul Masy-yi Ilash Sholah, Arba'ul Qowa'id Taduurul Ahkam 'alaiha, Ushulul Iman, Mansakul Hajj, Al-Jawahirul Mudhiyyah, Al-Khuthobul Minbariyah, Ar- Rosa-ilu Asy-Syakhshiyyah, Ar-Risalatul Mufidah, Ath-Thoharoh, Al-Qowa'idul Arba'ah, Al-Kabair, Masa-ilul Jahiliyyah,

Ba'dhu Fawa-id Shulhil Hudaibiyah, Tafsiru Ayaatin Minal Qur'anil Karim , Tsalatsatul Ushul, Majmu'atul Hadith 'ala Abwabil Fiqh, Risale fir Raddi 'alar Rafidhah, Syuruthush Sholah wa Arkanuha wa Wajibatuha, Fatawa wa Masa-il, Fadho-ilul Qur'an, Fadhlul Islam, Kitabut Tauhid, Kasyfus Syubuhat, Mabhatsul Ijtihad wal Khilaf, Majmu'atu Rosa-il fit Tauhidi wal Iman, Mukhtashorul Inshof wa Asy-Syarhul Kabir, Mukhtashor Tafsir Surat Al-Anfal, Mukhtashor Zadil Ma'ad li Ibnil Qayyim Al-Jauziyah, Mukhtashor Sirotir Rasul Shallallahu 'alaihi wa Sallam , Masa-il, summary of Ibn Taimiyyah's explanations, Mufidul Mustafid fi Kufri Tarikit Tauhid. These books by him can still be read and studied today. In fact, it is studied and explored because of the many useful knowledge that students of science can gain from studying these books.

In brief, let's take a look at the book by Sheikh Muhammad bin Abdul Wahhab titled Kitab Tauhid. This book contains prohibitions against committing shirk (associating partners with Allah) and describes various forms of shirk commonly found in society. The Sheikh explains the importance of practicing true monotheism (tauhid), where worship, requests, and supplications are directed solely to Allah. He warns against persisting in shirk, such as believing in shamans or seeking help from trees, stones, and the like.

The danger of dying in shirk is severe, as it leads to eternal punishment in a blazing hellfire.Meanwhile, another book by the Sheikh, titled The Nullifiers of Islam, explains the actions that can cause a person to leave Islam. It discusses behaviors that distance us from Allah's mercy. The book highlights the dangers of shirk, seeking help from others besides Allah, declaring others as disbelievers, following guidance other than that of the Prophet Muhammad, hating the religion brought by the Prophet, and other actions that can invalidate one's faith. Thus, this book calls us to be vigilant and to safeguard our faith.

A Wahhabi pamphlet distributed in Mecca in 1803 contained several points.

"This can be seen from the statement: "We announce our belief as follows. The teaching we adhere to in religion is that of Ahlus-Sunnah wal-Jama'ah. We believe the path of salvation that we follow is the same as that of the righteous people of the past (Salaf al-Ummah). It is a straightforward and easy path. We oppose the doctrine that the best way is through modern methods. We follow the Qur'an and Hadith according to their clear, literal meanings, leaving the interpretation to Allah, the Almighty."
