Mental health, these words are certainly often forgotten, not even noticed. Focus on doing activities that make people often forget the importance of mental health. This makes the level of stress in Indonesia as it increases. Or usually among young people, activities during this pandemic are mostly monotonous, so a lot of free time ends up being used for overthinking, could you be one of them?

However, what does overthinking really mean?

Overthinking is defined as a habit of thinking excessively about something that has happened, both in the past and in the future. Someone who has these habits may have felt hurt, disappointment, a high level of worry, maybe even rejection that they have faced.

Positive things that can be taken from this habit of overthinking usually help someone to be more alert before taking action or making decisions. However, if done continuously and more and more day by day, it can have a negative impact on your mental health.

This is because it can waste the energy that is in you and increase excessive anxiety, so that it can interfere with your sleep time or your activities.

Here are some mental health impacts!

  • Mental Health Related to Physical Health

According to Dr. Brock Chisholm, “without mental health there can be no real physical health” which means without mental health we will not have true physical health. For example, you must have experienced something like when you lost your spirit, and your body suddenly felt weak. Meanwhile, even when sick to think it's hard. This is called the mind-body connection, which means that our feelings, thoughts, beliefs, and attitudes can affect our physical health positively or negatively. On the other hand, physical health can affect mental health both positively and negatively.

Research has also proven the influence of mental health on a person's physical, and vice versa. The study proved that in patients with depression, the risk of having a heart attack was more than twice as high, while treating symptoms after a heart attack was shown to reduce mortality rates in patients.

  • Mental Health Related to Social Life

In social life, a person with mental health disorders looks for problems in relationships, self-care, sex, finding, and so on. For example, a disorder experiences symptoms such as reduced motivation which results in laziness in living life, so that self-care is reduced.

Conversely, social life also affects mental health, a healthy social environment will create a healthy person and have a positive outlook. For example, a person who is surrounded by people who are always there for him, is likely to be a person who has a positive view of himself and others.

This is proven in several studies conducted using Attachment Style theory, which is a theory that says that there is an influence between a caregiver and a child. A person can be a positive person, anxious or avoidant because of the upbringing he experienced as a child.

  • Benefits of maintaining mental health
  1. Mental health helps face everyday challenges. A person with good mental health tends to be able to cope with the stress they experience. They can also well control their emotions and actions.
  2. Mental health helps you have a positive outlook. Good mental health can create a positive outlook, both for yourself and for others.
  3. Health makes us have good physical health. Because mental health is related to physical health, a mentally healthy person is better able to recover from illness. They have a positive view of themselves, thus speeding up the healing process.
  4. Mental health helps promote good concentration and focus skills. Good mental health makes a person think well, this results in their focus and attention being more focused. People who have poor mental health are usually not easily focused and distracted.
  • This is the negative impact of overthinking on health
