Insomnia is a sleep disorder that occurs when a person has difficulty falling asleep. This condition makes the sufferer do not have the amount of sleep the body needs. This causes the physical condition of people with insomnia to not be fit enough to carry out activities the next day.
Â
This problem can occur in the short term (acute) to long term (chronic). In addition, sleep is an unconscious state that occurs naturally to allow the body to rest. During sleep, the body will go through cycles that alternate between fast eye movement sleep and non-rapid eye movement sleep.
Â
A person may go through four or five sleep cycles in one night. One sleep cycle lasts approximately 90 minutes. This cycle begins with the four stages of non-REM sleep, ranging from light sleep to deep sleep. Then, it is followed by REM sleep and it is at this stage that the dream process occurs.Â
Causes of Insomnia
Usually, the type of insomnia a person experiences has a lot to do with the underlying cause of the insomnia. There are two types of insomnia, namely acute and chronic insomnia. So, some of the possible causes of acute insomnia include:
Experiencing stress.
Recalling a traumatic event
Changes in sleeping habits, such as living in a new house.
Experiencing jet lag or motion sickness after boarding a plane.
Taking certain drugs
Â
On the other hand, chronic insomnia can occur on its own or as a result of:
Chronic pain conditions, such as arthritis or back pain.
Psychological problems, such as anxiety, depression, or substance use disorders.
Have certain health conditions such as diabetes, cancer, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), or cardiovascular disease
Chronic insomnia can last for at least 3 months and can be primary or secondary. So far, the primary type of sleep disorder has no known cause. However, in the secondary type, other conditions can occur, such as the influence of medical conditions, psychological problems, use of certain substances, and diabetes.
