TRANSFER OF THE FUNCTION OF THE CITY HALL TO THE JAKARTA MUSEUM

De Oude Stadhuis, or "Old Town Hall," was founded in 1905 after the formation of the Gemeente Batavia. Initially, this building served as the administrative center of Batavia. During the VOC and Dutch East Indies times, this building was used as a place of government, courts, civil registration, and worship on holidays. In 1913, the Jakarta municipal office was moved to Tanah Abang, and De Oude Stadhuis was no longer the municipality's administrative center. After these changes, this building was used as the West Java resident's office until 1942, when Japanese troops took over this building as a logistics center. After Indonesian independence, this building was again used as the West Java provincial government office and the Military Command Headquarters 1 City until 1961. In 1970, Governor Ali Sadikin designated this building as a cultural heritage, and on March 30, 1974, this building was inaugurated as a Museum History of Jakarta.

Equation of Twin City Hall Architectural Style :

Stadhuis Amsterdam

  • Three floors
  • Has no borders. The statue of the goddess Justitia is placed at the top of the "Forton" (a triangular shape at the front of the building)
  • The Forton's parts have always been triangular from the start
  • On the upper face, you can see the coat of arms of the United Republic of the Netherlands
  • The front is not inscribed
  • It has architectural characteristics found in buildings in the second half of the 18th century.
  • Six pillars in the Doric style support the nave.
  • The building is crowned with a small octagonal tower with columns and a cross atop it.

Stadhuis Batavia

  • Two floors,
  • It had a landing on the front which was an addition and served as an execution stage until 1896,
  • The statue of the goddess Justitia was placed in a niche in the middle of the fronton while still having a semicircular proton,
  • The previous section of the Proton was curved in a semicircle before being renovated into a triangle in 1830. The VOC symbol and state emblem were dismantled on this occasion, and Justitia was moved to the fronton peak,
  • On the upper face, there is the coat of arms of Batavia,
  • It has the words "Gouvernoeurskantoor" (meaning Governor's Office) on the front.

JAKARTA, A BIG VILLAGE

Jakarta, as a metropolis, actually started from a collection of villages that were formed a long time ago, either based on specific ethnic groups or those that were created naturally. Establishing a town as a community united with the same ethnic background was often seen as a form of segregation by the colonial government. Ethnic settlements such as Makassar, Bugis, Balinese, Madurese, and others in separate villages around the city are not only in the town of Batavia but also in other cities on the North Coast of Java. There needs to be a clear pattern in the placement of kampung around Batavia.
The placement of the village was determined more by the availability of vacant land belonging to the VOC. The lands reserved for settlements are generally located not far from the city. The grounds were mainly around the six small fortifications (redoubts) that circled the outer side of the city walls at a distance of 1 to 2 kilometers. However, the impression of segregation itself is not visible because each village does not limit interactions with other towns, and many people move from village to village. Until now, it seems that the name village does not reflect the ethnic population within it.
