Tenganan villagers prioritize balance in different ways. This fits their teachings is Hindu Law of Indra called Tri Hita Karana which maintains a balanced relationship between humans with humans, humans with nature, humans, and God. Generally, every family in the Tenganan Village community must carry out the tebenan ritual in accordance with the applicable sequences or procedures, there is no distinction between people who have a high economic class or someone who is considered to have a special position in society. Each family carries out the tebenan ceremony in accordance with existing customary rules. The difference in the ceremony carried out is based on the size of the event carried out based on their economic level. The next ritual or traditional ceremony performed by the people of Tenganan Village is the marriage ceremony. The marriage system adopted by the Tenganan Village community is a parental system, women and men in the family have the same degree and are entitled to be heirs. This is what makes Tenganan Village different from other villages.

They are also bound by awig-awig (customary law) which requires marriages to be conducted with fellow Tenganan villagers. If this is violated, the resident is not allowed to become a village krama (citizen). This means that they must leave Tenganan Village and the husband and wife will be physically banished (maselong) for some time to a place far from their place of origin.  However, this law has been abandoned since 1951.

5. Tenganan Village Products

Do you know that Tenganan Village also has a unique and cool product, namely the Gringsing double ikat weaving craft. Gringsing comes from the word Gering which means pain and sing which means not. The making of Gringsing weaving in Tenganan Pegringsingan, through a fairly complicated process and takes a long time, even the process of Gringsing woven fabric with the best quality, can take 2 years. So it's no wonder that the selling price is quite expensive, but it will be commensurate with the products that have top quality. In making it, anyone can make it. However, 99.9 percent of weavers are dominated by women because women are considered to have extra patience.

6. Resident House

If you want to enter Tenganan Village, you will definitely see two rows of houses. So each banjar has two rows of houses, to the left and right of the village road (awangan) built on village customary land called karang desa. Settlements in Tenganan follow a centralized pattern. It stretches from the north and decreases towards the south. The houses face each other because Tenganan villagers have the idea that they must take care of each other. Each banjar consists of two rows of alang-alang-fronted houses and an entrance facing the village road. Traditional buildings are mostly located in the middle of the village road. Tenganan residents are only allowed to live and utilize the land based on customary agreements and awig-awig, the book of customary regulations. To use a house 11/14 forest products will be decided through the village kraman or a collective meeting of village leaders.

7.      Prohibition in Tenganan Village

The application of Tri Hita Karana is very attached to Bali as well as Tenganan Village which uses the concept of Tri Hita Karana in forest conservation efforts in Tenganan Village. The concept of Tri Hita Karana has been applied in forest conservation efforts in Tenganan Pegringsingan Village, especially the Palemahan section. Tenganan Pegringsingan Traditional Village has rules that must be obeyed if not then the violator must be punished psychologically or physically. Even to preserve the forest is contained in awig-awig, including rules about the prohibition of cutting down trees carelessly. People in Tenganan Pegringsingan Village are not allowed to cut down trees carelessly and will be fined 10 catu (equivalent to 25 kilograms of rice). If picking is fined 10 catu (equivalent to 25 kilograms of rice) plus the price of the fruit picked. The fines will be distributed with the calculation that 50 percent goes to the village and 50 percent goes to the reporter. The identity of the reporter is also kept confidential. In relation to flora sustainability, residents in Tenganan Pegringsingan Traditional Village are not allowed to sell or give palm fiber to others. However, selling palm fiber rope is permitted. This prohibition aims not to disturb the life of the enau tree as a producer of palm fiber. While the enau tree itself is a staple plant in the Tenganan forest. Tenganan Pegringsingan residents are also prohibited from making wine and sugar. However, making tuak or nira water is allowed. Making red bricks is also not allowed. This prohibition is intended to prevent excessive use of firewood. However, which is quite unique, the awig-awig of Tenganan Pegringsingan Village also prohibits its citizens from planting tarum trees. In fact, tarum is the material used to dye gringsing cloth, especially blue. Therefore, Tenganan Pegringsingan residents must look for tarum trees outside the village.

The meaning of the prohibition against planting tarum trees is that Tenganan Pegringsingan residents want to cooperate with cutting down for building materials must go through a village meeting first. If the village meeting decides that the tree can be cut down, then it can be done. If the tree is still in a leafy state (alive), residents who want to cut down the tree must ask the Village Kelian for an inspection. The Village Head then sends three people to inspect the tree. The inspectors are one from Bahan Luanan, one from Bahan Duluan/Keliang Desa and one from Bahan Tebenan. The tree may be cut down if the results of the inspection show that 80 percent of the tree is dead and only 20 percent is still alive and is not the main wood shaft. However, it must be approved by all three parties. If one of the parties/materials does not agree, the felling will be postponed for a few months. However, it is permissible to cut down trees if they are used to build public facilities. The right to tumapung is a privilege given to a newly married person. According to village rules, three months after the wedding ceremony, the bride and groom must separate from their parents and build a new household. The village gives the new family a plot of land measuring 2,432 acres. To build a house on the land, the bride and groom were allowed to cut down wooden trees but only in moderation.
