Flex is a slang term meaning "to show off," whether it be your physique, your belongings, or some other thing you consider superior to those of others. Flexing has become increasingly prevalent in Indonesian society. This trend has been fueled by the rise of social media and the desire for validation and acceptance. However, the issue of flexing is not without its consequences, particularly when it comes to poverty.

Poverty is a persistent issue in Indonesia, with approximately 27 million people living below the poverty line. Poverty in Indonesia is concentrated in rural areas and among certain groups, such as women, children, and the elderly. Despite the government's efforts to reduce poverty, it remains a persistent issue in the country. The issue of flexing can exacerbate poverty by perpetuating a culture of materialism.

People who are struggling to make ends meet may feel pressure to keep up with the trend of flexing, leading them to overspend on unnecessary items and go into debt. Moreover, flexing can create a sense of envy and resentment among those who are less fortunate. It can lead to feelings of inadequacy and a sense of being left behind in society, which can be damaging to mental health and well-being.
The issue of flexing can contribute to social inequality by widening the gap between the rich and the poor. Those who have the means to flex are often seen as more desirable and successful, which can give them access to better opportunities and resources. This can create a self-perpetuating cycle where the rich get richer, while the poor continue to struggle.

In conclusion, flexing, or the act of showing off one's wealth and status, is one of the recent trends that is often found in Indonesia. The issue of flexing in Indonesia's poverty is a complex one that requires a multi-faceted solution. While the desire to gain social recognition and prestige is understandable, it is important to consider the impact that flexing can have on society as a whole. The government and civil society organizations should work together to promote financial literacy and education, as well as more meaningful and sustainable ways of improving one's financial situation.
