Surabaya, one of the largest cities in Indonesia, is increasingly feeling the effects of climate change. The impacts of extreme weather patterns, rising sea levels and increasing temperatures are affecting the environment and local residents. As a coastal city, Surabaya faces serious risks related to flooding, especially during the rainy season. Prolonged hot periods and changing rainfall patterns disrupt daily life and put pressure on the city's infrastructure, water supply and agriculture.

A report from the journal Nature Climate Change reveals how climate change is exacerbating water scarcity globally, including in Southeast Asia. The findings suggest that regions experiencing reduced rainfall will have longer water collection times, a burden often borne by women and children. Surabaya, with its high urban population and reliance on regional water sources, is particularly vulnerable to these changing climate patterns.

Adaptation Efforts in Surabaya

Local governments in Surabaya are working to address these changes through urban planning and infrastructure improvements. Flood control systems have been improved in some parts of the city, with retention ponds and canals being expanded. However, these measures are often only temporary as climate models predict that more frequent and severe weather events will continue to challenge the city's efforts.

Environmental activist groups in Surabaya have urged the government to strengthen environmental policies, promote green open spaces, and encourage sustainable energy practices. These initiatives are seen as essential to building resilience to the impacts of climate change, especially in the areas of water management and urban planning.

To understand how locals view the impacts of climate change, I interviewed Zevira, a student at Airlangga University in Surabaya, who shared her thoughts on the future of the city amidst the worsening climate crisis.

"I've seen more flooding in recent years, especially in low-lying areas. When it rains heavily, even for just a few hours, the roads are quickly submerged. This makes daily travel very difficult," says Zevira. "I fear that if this continues, the city will not be able to cope. Many people, especially in the coastal areas, may lose their homes."

She also emphasized that water shortages are becoming more frequent. "During the dry season, we often have to ration water because the supply is unreliable. This affects everyone, but it is especially difficult for those who rely on water for their business."

Zevira highlights the need to raise public awareness about climate change. "Many people still don't understand how serious this problem is. We need more education and better policies to ensure that Surabaya can adapt."

Experts warn that cities like Surabaya must act quickly to mitigate the effects of climate change. Implementing sustainable water management systems, improving flood defenses, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions are important steps to protect the city. In addition, raising public awareness and encouraging community participation in environmental conservation will be crucial in building resilience.

The challenges faced by Surabaya due to climate change are part of a global issue, but with the right strategies, the city can overcome these changes and ensure a safer and more sustainable future.
